Democratic chairman criticizes GOP's threat of sanction

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The chairman of the Alabama Republican Party has sent a letter to GOP legislative candidates warning that they could be tossed from the party if they don't follow the Republican legislative leadership in organizing the House and Senate.

Democratic Party Chairman Joe Turnham said the letter strips Republican candidates of their free will in determining who should lead the next Legislature and how its rules should operate.

"This cuts right to democracy," Turnham said at a news conference Thursday.

In response, GOP Chairman Twinkle Andress Cavanaugh said, "The Democrats will do anything and say anything to stay in power in the Legislature because they are scared Republicans will bring real reform and conservative change if elected into leadership."

That's how the GOP runs all 3 branches of government here. If any state legislator or senator doesn't toe the line exactly, the GOP will pull all their funds and run someone against them in the next election.
