1. yes and they are deliberately diffusing

the power and meaning of the word.
The Bush Regime lives by polls (even though they deny it)
and I'm sure they are well aware that many folks
equate the Bush Regime and the Republican Party
with fascism. So what do they do... abuse the meaning
of the word (and project it on their adversaries... us).

I think it's too late though. People use the term after they've come to the conclusion, not before. The conclusion has been made. At best this will provide a tiny bit of cover to their true believers.
And their true believers must be pretty desperate for a tiny bit of cover at this point.
