so surreal - President reminds citizens country is at war
Can you picture this headline during WWII or Vietnam? This administration has cut taxes and initiated stop-loss programs to trap exisiting soldiers into service. There has been no sacrifice asked of the average American and there has been very little taken independantly. The entire burden of the "war on terror" is sholdered by the soldiers and their friends and family. So gentle is the yoke on the rest of us that we need the President to remind us that we are at war and that we face a deadly enemy.

Many DUers will write Bush's statements off as his usual fear-mongering. But this is more than that, it's the evidence of his failed leadership. His inability to communicate. His inability to unite the country around a common goal. It is the evidence of Rumsfeld's failed "lean and mean" armed forces. It is the evidence of the failure of PNAC. It is the evidence of failure on many fronts and if there's one thing I've learned about Americans - it's that they don't tolerate failure.

Bush reminds Americans U.S. is at war

WASHINGTON -
President Bush used terrorists' own words Tuesday to battle complacency among Americans about the threat of future attack, defending his record as the fall campaign season kicks into high gear.

Bush said that despite the absence of a successor on U.S. soil to the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, the terrorist danger remains potent.

"Bin laden and his terrorist's allies have made their intentions as clear as Lenin and Hitler before them," the president said before the Military Officers Association of America and diplomatic representatives other countries that have suffered terrorist attacks. "The question is `Will we listen? Will we pay attention to what these evil men say?'"

2. In a sense, the US isn't at war.
George Bush is at war and happens to be using our troops to do the fighting for him. The aims of the war are corporate, and hence private, of value only to the Bush family and their circle of cronies and sponsors. Essentially, our service personnel have become mercenaries, subcontracted to BushCo.

No wonder he needs to 'remind' us we're at war.

...what you said.....

IMO...they want a terrorist "incident" so bad they can taste it. It's a smell on the wind.....

And THAT is the real danger?

6. I sense that this thing has gotten way out of hand for them.
I am really beginning to think that they believed that they could actually "win" this thing in a few months after the invasion. They never planned for this long drawn out war that they are now losing. They are putting their full faith in that puppet government to subdue the insurrection. They put their best face forward at all times about the situation, the whole thing is a nightmare.

5. Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and the rest of the neocon cabal
...have been waiting for an excuse, any excuse to use nuclear weapons in the middle east and now we hear the rhetoric being ramped up by Bush setting the stage.
