little Kenny Blackwell smacked down by Ohio judge
you're either committed to democracy or you're playing politics ... little Kenny Blackwell, Ohio's Secretary of State, has quite obviously been "doing his job" just the way the republican party would want him too ...

without even getting into the issue of rigged voting machines, Blackwell has been doing everything in his power to make sure only the "right people" get to cast a ballot in Ohio ...

in Florida, a court recently ruled that the State's voter registration law was also too restrictive ... interesting, eh? Ohio and Florida ... it's nice to know there are still judges who put the law ahead of the will of the masters ...

Judge Tosses Ohio Voter Sign-Up Rules

A federal judge threw out new state rules governing voter registration drives on Friday, saying they appear to violate the First Amendment and hurt efforts to sign up new voters.

Effective immediately, voters should ignore references to criminal penalties on the registration forms, U.S. District Judge Kathleen O'Malley said. She gave the secretary of state's office five days to remove references to the rules and penalties on its Web site.

Secretary of State Ken Blackwell, the Republican candidate for governor, said he plans to comply.

"Voting rights in Ohio have just been emancipated and now our goal is to replace fear with enthusiasm," said one of the plaintiffs, the Rev. Tony Minor. <skip>

A coalition of voter advocacy groups and Democratic lawmakers had sued the state, arguing the regulations should be thrown out.

The rules required those who register people to vote to submit the forms in person or by mail to the local board of elections. They also mandated online training for those who are paid to register voters. <skip>

O'Malley's order comes just days after a federal judge in Miami declared a Florida voter registration law unconstitutional. U.S. District Judge Patricia Seitz said penalties for violations threatened free speech rights and said political parties were unfairly exempted.

2. Great news!
But who will be the next Ken Blackwell/Katherine Harris to throw an election to the gop? Those are the people who need to be under the microscope right now.

3. It will be Blackwell
He's in charge of overseeing the election where he is running for Governor against Ted Strickland. Guess who will "win". :grr:

4. That really sucks.
I was thinking too of other areas of the country that could be tipping points in a national election.

Add to the mix, ways to keep minorities from voting and you got the winning rethug cocktail.

35. Just think about what the comon denominators were in FL & OH
The 2 biggest common factors was Secretary of State to control the elections and lots of electoral votes.

First CA got rid of their Dem gov. Then the Democratic SoS was fighting to keep Diebold out of CA. Here's a link for a little background:
http://www.verifiedvoting.org/article.php?id=5021
All of a sudden the CA SoS gets railroaded out of office and replaced.

There was quite a bit written about it on DU over a period of a few months. I recommend DUing a little searching to get a fuller understanding of the coup in CA.

This is why voting reform needs to be at the top of the list of things to get done. Thanks for the link!

5. Its going to be a really tough fight
He's also discouraging people from voting with restrictive ID laws - Jim Crow, actually.

These, too will probably be thrown out of court, but not before they've scared a lot of people away from their polling place on Election Day.

Expect to see more hijinks on Election Day, too, vis a vis workers who don't show up to work, not enough machines, breakdowns, etc.

6. How in the hell can this be allowed to happen??
For anyone to be in charge of an election in which they are a candidate is ridiculous -- talk about a conflict of interest. It doesn't get much more conflicting than that. That is, of course, unless you are in charge of getting a president elected and you run the elections.

Edited on Sat Sep-02-06 08:20 PM by welshTerrier2
the finding of the Court was that NOT "every possibility to allow a person to vote" was provided?

and about these "po'" folks showing up just before the polls closed ... what say you about wide patterns of racial discrimination? what say you about providing far fewer voting machines in minority neighborhoods? what say you about the "automatic reject ballot" switch in many of the voting machines? do you even know about how that was used to discriminate against minorities?

the "automatic ballot switch" is a feature provided on many electronic voting machines (including optical scanners) ... in Florida, you see, voters in mostly white, wealthy districts, who improperly filled out their ballots had the ballot immediately rejected and they were given an opportunity to have their ballot voided so they could immediately revote ... in poorer, mostly black voting districts, improperly completed ballots were accepted when turned in and then later excluded from the vote count ... the voter never knew it happened ...

sound like an equitable system to you?

do yourself a favor and read some unbiased research on the vulnerability of voting machines ... go to this web site and read the article entitled "The Machinery of Democracy" ...

if you really believe there's much integrity in our electoral system, you might want to cut back on the Kool-Aid and do some research ...

28. Bigotry is based on ignorance -- rock-hard stupidity.
Even the 6th graders know that anyone in line when the polls close has a legally-protected right to vote and it doesn't make a fucking bit of difference how long the line is.

Imbecile. Cretin. Sociopath. Fool. Far, far stupider even than alleged of those dissed. Ironic.

18. Strickland's up by 25 points
The presidential election was a dead heat in Ohio and easy to fix. If Blackwell tried to rig an election with a 25 point spread he would be indicted for doing so. Short of a miracle (for him), Ken Blackwell will be unemployed as of November 7th.
