JUST BECAUSE
JUST BECAUSE
By Nancy Greggs

God knows it’s hard to believe sometimes. Hard to believe that in the face of what’s been happening in the past six years, there is still something to hope for, something positive to hold on to, some unstoppable Phoenix that will emerge from the ashes of what our nation once was.

Like so many of us, I no longer believe in those in charge of my country, in those who have shown themselves to be traitors wrapped in tattered flags, in those who will do whatever is necessary to acquire political power or accumulate personal wealth.

But I do believe in my fellow citizens, those who will not be moved from positions that are morally right, those who will not abandon what is ethically sound, those who will not be led astray by false prophets or enticed to abandon their principles.

I still believe in America …

Because somewhere, right at this very minute, there is a politician who is deciding to do what is right for his constituents, instead of what is right for his own career ambitions.

Because somewhere a judge is rendering a decision based on the law as he knows it, and not on the political bias he has been encouraged to embrace.

Because somewhere there is a journalist who has seen one too many lies in print, and is about to set the record straight, come what may.

Because somewhere there is an office worker who has seen something untoward happening, and has mustered up the courage to blow the whistle.

Because somewhere there is a firefighter who is rushing into a burning building, risking his own life to save someone else’s without thinking about whether that person shares his religion or agrees with his politics.

Because somewhere there is a housewife who is welcoming a new neighbor with a smile and a wave, even though they look different than the other neighbors on the street.

Because somewhere there is a minister who is writing a Sunday sermon about love and tolerance, instead of hatred and fear.

Because somewhere there is a rabbi who is bowing his head in prayer with a Muslim, each acknowledging that they are praying to the same God – each in his own language, each in his own way.

Because somewhere there is a teacher who is looking at her worst student not a nuisance, but as a challenge that is worth her every effort.

Because somewhere there is a timid kid who is befriending the schoolyard bully, and is realizing that friendship can overcome the worst of fears.

Because somewhere there is a man who is late for work, because he is stopping to ask a homeless person if there is something he can do to help.

Because somewhere a doctor is scheduling surgery for a patient without the money to pay for it, because saving a life is more important than collecting a fee.

Because somewhere someone is giving blood without inquiring as to the political leanings of the end-user; someone is signing an organ donor card without specifying the ethnicity of the recipient.

Because somewhere a priest is hearing the confession of a gay man, and is reminding him that God loves him no matter whom he chooses to love.

Because somewhere someone who has been wronged is accepting an apology without seeking revenge. Because somewhere someone who has done wrong is seeking to make things right.

Because somewhere a soldier is comforting a wounded man, and isn’t seeing a friend nor an enemy, but only a fellow human being.

Because somewhere a baby is coming into a world that will be changed for the better by their existence, while somewhere someone is leaving this world in the knowledge they have made a difference simply by having done their best to do the right thing.

Because somewhere someone who has remained silent is finding their voice, someone who has been taught to hate is learning to reach out, someone who has been blinded is seeking the truth, someone who has accepted without question is now asking for answers, someone who has been told to be suspicious of everyone is accepting their fellow citizens at face value without preconceived prejudices.

Because somewhere someone is composing a song, writing a story, telling a tale, sharing a joke, snapping a photo, painting a scene, or tending a garden not for fame or financial reward, but just for the sheer joy of making the world a more beautiful place.

Because somewhere, in every corner of my beloved country, there are people who will not be turned away from what is good, from what is right, from what is just.

That is why I still believe.

Just because.

14. Need a rant about Mike Malloy!
Dear Nance,

One of the few STRONG voices we had has been snuffed out. Mike Malloy on Air America Radio was fired on Thurs. without notice. One huge example of how our democracy is dying, one voice at a time. His articulate and accurate criticisms of the Bush Cabal were just too much for the prez. I believe the order to fire him came right from the top.

32. Taking the Air America bait
OK, I'll take the bait. Malloy was dumped because he isn't making money for the rapidly tanking Air America. Personally I think they should have fired Franken. Al is making tons of money off Air America and not doing squat. He's become complacent raking in the money, laughing all the way to the bank. They could dump Franken and probably hire 5 Malloy's. They should at least cut Franken's salary by a factor of 10 and tell him further salary changes will be based on marketshare. Maybe that will get him off his duff.

You're living in a fantasy world if you think Bush controls Air America, the media, and most of the world. What is he, a brilliant political strategist in control of everything? Or dumb as dirt? Can't have it both ways.

If I had such power and I were in control of the media, believe me my approval ratings would be through the roof, not at 35%.

15. Nice rant...
...but I'm afraid I don't share your sentiments of hope. After seeing so many people who blindly follow their "Dear Leader" in the White House, and seeing others who don't like the whole right-wing spiral in this nation, I'm starting to myself believe there's absolutely no hope whatsoever of regaining the fleeting moment of "Pax Americana"; the brief time of relative peace before the Empire falls in a firey wreck.

If any of you would like to try to convince me otherwise; that there is still reason to look forward to times ahead, please do so. Thank you. :nuke:

20. Probably nobody would be able to convince you, if you have already
decided that there simply is no hope. But without hope, one does indeed die, if not physically, then spiritually and emotionally, and the darkworkers have won. I live in what john sayles referred to as "the heart of darkness", overwhelmingly conservative colorado springs, which would make almost anyone despair. but I see countless people working hard to get the idiots and theocrats out of office here, countless more who turned out to help the katrina victims who came here, countless more volunteering at the various soup kitchens and service agencies, countless more working to save and protect our amazing garden of the gods and other natural wonders, decent, caring, loving, helpful, wonderful people all. Is that enough? possibly not, but I refuse to let the bastards win. and they cannot win, as long as they cannot touch our hearts, our minds, our souls, no matter what else they manage to do.

peace, my friend--and go sit and watch the waves for a time, it is very healing.

41. Thanks, Niyad
Unfortunately, I still have a low confidence in people as a whole, mostly because the same people who put so much energy and effort into helping their fellow Americans also do so, so that the US will remain the dominant power in the world, prolonging the imperial oppression of other peoples the world over, from Latin American dictators to The brutal regime of Saudi Arabia. So at the root, even if what seems like an act of generosity and kindness keeps this system in place, doing more harm for other people elsewhere in the world.

21. It does seem as if...
... every time we have a few years in which we feel hopeful the country takes another swing to the right. It's almost as if the U.S. can't make up its collective mind about the sort of nation it will be.

Maybe it's not realistic to imagine that we can go on as we have, without some "wreck." Hopefully, we can turn things around before that happens, but I think then we also will need to be every bit as vigilant and self-critical as we are now. It's not enough to simply turn the "ship of state" around. We will need to be sure it stays on course because I'm afraid the kinds of people who still think Reagan was a great man and those who still think this pResident is a great man are not going to give up their aspirations easily either.

28. And the place to go is...
Nice post.

This November, and in 2008 I will use my vote for the only party that:

* Is not consumed by hatred of some one or some group.
* Knows how to stay out of other country's business.
* Is not owned by large corporations, special interests, or a few very rich people.
* Will stay out of my bedroom.
* Will reduce federal control over states, and my personal life.
* Knows how to keep an economy strong.
* Cares about the entire Bill-of-Rights, not just a few ammendments.

That party is...

The Libertarians.

38. My world
Funny so many tell me that I am in my own world. I feel life should be simple and all to often it is made difficult with all the have to's and not possibles. Like MLK; I too am one of the dreamers and I have a dream.

Looks like I have at least one other in my world all it take is a little concern, and an open heart & mind.

LIFE CAN BE GOOD!
Thanks for pointing that out!
