California Senate: Feinstein (D) 56%, Mountjoy (R) 34%
California's U.S. Senate race has tightened slightly, but not enough to furrow the brow of the Democratic incumbent. Easily absorbing a five-point decline in her lead since July, Senator Dianne Feinstein now leads former Republican state Senator Richard Mountjoy 56% to 34%.

A major issue for Mountjoy is illegal immigration, and he has touted his role in bringing Proposition 187 to the ballot in 1994. Voters passed the initiative, which would have banned giving government benefits to illegal aliens (it was overturned in the courts). But although immigration has been a top issue in the gubernatorial campaign, Mountjoy's poorly financed and GOP-snubbed Senate campaign hasn't been able to gain much traction with it.

Mountjoy does attract 74% of Republicans, but only 4% of Democrats. Feinstein is able to lure 19% of Republicans - and 29% of conservatives.

Feinstein, viewed favorably by 53%, including 31% who view her "very" favorably. Overall, 21% viewing her "very" unfavorably.

1. Looks as if Dianne's headed for re-election out there in California.

3. She still gets it right more than she gets it wrong
and until she gets a credible challenge in the primary, she should be returned.

You know the horse's patoot running against her wouldn't get anything right.

6. Agree. If I were still in California, I'd vote for her to be re-elected.
Mountjoy is pretty much a joke.

4. It's SO not a race ....
...that I, a California resident, wasn't aware that Feinstein was up this year. And I never heard of this Mountjoy.

5. Hey, we've got our noble-yet-futile battles as well...
Poor Erik Fleming running against Trent Lott in Mississippi. That's gotta be my worst nightmare. :scared:

Or poor Barbara Radnofsky -- who would make a great senator, IMHO -- against Hutchinson in Texas :scared: :scared:
