MD-Senate...Cardin opens up a lead over Mfume...

Gonzales Research. 8/18-25. "Active voters". MoE 3.5% (4/4-13 results)

Democratic primary

Cardin (D) 43 (39)
Mfume (D) 30 (31)

CQ credits Cardin's many endorsements and an ad blitz for moving the numbers:

Glad to hear it...Cardin does stand the better chance against Steele, and will be a very good Senator...much in the Sarbanes mold....

1. I'm leaning toward Cardin myself . . .

But Mfume is no slouch. Either one of them could whack Steele pretty thoroughly.

I go for Cardin because I think he's likely to be more adroit in working the mechanism of government than Mfume. We'll need a lot of passion after November to attack the many injustices and idiocies of the previous Congress, and I'd like to see a high degree of legislative-technical competence. In that regard, Cardin has better chops than Mfume.

4. I will vote for Cardin in primary but enthusiastically vote for Mfume in
November if he wins. Either one will make a far better senator than Steele and I still think the Dems can capture the Senate.

5. Cardin just seems OLD. I'd like to see some newer blood in the Senate.
Nothing wrong with Cardin - good man, good Congressman - but seems like the past, not the future. I'm in DC, so can't vote, but would vote for Mfume. I actually like Josh Rales (what I know of him) - wish they'd let him in the debate tonight. Democracy as we practice it - not so inclusive.

6. Josh Rales contributed to Bush in 2004. He is not a real Democrat, Why
Edited on Thu Aug-31-06 10:44 PM by yellowcanine
would you support him over Cardin? Yeah, Rales and Mfume are more flashy than Cardin but flashy ain't everything. I just think Cardin makes the best Senator. Older sometimes means wiser and more experienced. And he is actually only 5 years older than Mfume at 63 but has many more years of relevant legislative experience. Rales has zero legislative experience and has not just contributed big bucks to Bush but also to people like Bob Smith of NH, a very conservative Republican and also John Thune. The only reason Rales is a factor at all is his many expensive TV ads. His actual governing philosophy is a cipher, although from his recent strong support of conservative Republicans we can guess. Wolf in sheep's clothing. Steele is more liberal than Rales, imo.

In Maryland, Polls Conflict in Democratic Senate Race

Though a recent poll showed Rep. Ben Cardin (D-MD) holding a 13-point lead in Maryland's Democratic U.S. Senate primary, a new Survey USA poll gives former Rep. Kweisi Mfume (D-MD) a 4-point lead over Cardin, 42% to 38%.
