Cleland Rallies Behind Davis Against False Republican Attacks
08.28.2006
Former US Senator Calls on Democrats, Smith to Condemn Republican Special Interest Ads
LARGO – Democratic candidate for governor Jim Davis today hosted a news conference with former United States Senator Max Cleland, who condemned the Republican special interest-funded attack ads and called on Florida Democrats, including Davis's opponent Rod Smith, to do the same. Cleland is a decorated Vietnam veteran who lost his re-election bid in 2002 amid a storm of false Republican attacks.
"Jim Davis is a good man who has dedicated his seventeen year career in public service to fighting the Republican attacks and being on the side of Florida's families," said former United States Senator Max Cleland. "It's no surprise that the Republican special interests are attacking him, but it's shameful that a fellow Democrat, Rod Smith, is using the attacks to advance his own campaign. All Florida Democrats, including State Senator Smith, should stand up and condemn these attacks."
According to the latest reports, the U.S. Sugar Co., through its subsidiaries and a political front group, has spent nearly two million dollars to promote Rod Smith's campaign for governor and falsely attack Davis. The U.S. Sugar Co. has donated more than two million dollars in recent election cycles to Republican candidates and committees, including nearly $900,000 directly to the Republican Party of Florida. Their political front group uses a well-known Washington, DC-based Republican media firm and the group's treasurer holds the same position on Republican Tom Gallagher's campaign for governor.
"Sen. Cleland is a great American patriot who knows firsthand the destructive and divisive nature of these Republican smear tactics," Davis said. "I'm honored to have him standing with me and calling on Floridians to condemn these false attacks."
Despite falsely asserting during last week's televised debate that he has no relationship to the U.S. Sugar Co., Smith has a number of ties to the company. Smith's top political adviser is a registered lobbyist for U.S. Sugar Co., while the company's senior VP, Robert Coker, has said he supports Smith and has hosted a fundraiser and raised money for him. Smith's campaign has repeatedly acknowledged coordinating with the company's political front groups and even has the same political consultant.
