Buzz Hargrove to Visit CAW Katrina Reconstruction Project, Tuesday

August 28, 2006, 9:47 a.m. EST
** Canadian Skilled Trades Workers Help to Rebuild Ninth Ward **

Canadian Auto Workers union president Buzz Hargrove will tour the site of a CAW project to reconstruct hurricane ravaged homes in New Orleans’ Ninth Ward, on the anniversary of the devastation caused by Katrina.

Groups of CAW skilled trades members have volunteered to travel to New Orleans' poorest district, the Ninth Ward, to rebuild three family homes from top to bottom. They will be working on site with New Orleans based ACORN, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, which has organized the overall community reconstruction.

The union is paying for living quarters, food and travel expenses for 30 CAW skilled trades members who will do electrical, plumbing, carpentry and other work. They are working in groups for a week at a time, over the next five weeks, to complete the project.

Hargrove will be available for media interviews starting at 12:30 p.m. (Central/New Orleans time) on Tuesday, August 29 at one of the houses to be reconstructed at 939 Deslonde Street in the 9th Ward of New Orleans.
