MARY LYON FROM THE LEFT: Will We Remember?
Edited on Tue Aug-29-06 01:23 PM by Tace
(This is DU's own Calimary!)

If 9/11 changed everything, Katrina changed it back

Mary Lyon -- World News Trust

It’s been a year. A year since America got yet another rude slap in the face. Make that a double slap if you lived in New Orleans.

Does it seem to you as though that’s pretty much all we’ve received since George W. Bush “took” office in early 2001? Just slap after slap after slap in the face? That’s how it feels, to me.

Last year at this time, we, as a country, were glued to our TVs in states of mesmerized shock and shame. It was more than just a slap in the face. It was a sucker punch straight to the gut. Most of us could not believe our eyes – again. How could this be happening in a major American city -- the whole place almost literally washed off the map by a monster hurricane? That same monster hurricane had been tracked, measured, analyzed, and warned about -- repeatedly.

You’d think a president who hails from the state next door, particularly one that’s seen its share of hurricane damage, would have interrupted his sacrosanct vacation, at least this once. Hell, he was GOVERNOR of such a state. Hadn’t he weathered hurricanes there? Didn’t he know what might happen? Did he not remember the comprehensive video-conference briefing he got as the storm closed in, warning him of specifics (like the breaching of levees) that DID come to pass? The same warning about a nightmare come true that he later told an interviewer nobody expected? Maybe he still doesn’t remember, unless he bothers watching some of the coverage, with those inevitable clips presently being dredged out of the archives and replayed. Perhaps Dan Bartlett needs to make him another DVD compilation of “National Disasters for Dummies.”

1. Recommended,
and if I could I'd recommend it twice for the line about Bush "taking" office.

I think every time we refer to that, we should draw attention to that verb and the loaded meaning that schmuck has now given it.

Ours are a tuxedo mutt and a little brown/black tabby. And a dog. In order of appearance.

Thanks MUCH! I'm workin' on it.

Good luck on your other literary endevors... you're on the right track just keep chugging along. :pals:

18. They are very good writers but you are good as well. You each have a
different style and none is better then the other.. just different.

You come across as intelligent without being high brow so you're easy to read and understand. When I was taking creative writing in HS many years ago (and again in college) I was taught to always picture who your audience is/will be and talk TO them as you would if you were speaking to them in person. I think you do that just fine... just be the best "you" you can be and you'll do wonderfully. B-)

23. Thanks dahlink! It may come from all those years in radio.
'Cause you HAD to talk in such a way that the listener could relate. You NEVER talked "at" somebody. And it was ALWAYS somebody. Not somebodies. Just you and the one other person on opposite sides of the microphone. We were always encouraged to go on the air with the attitude that we were talking to a friend. No stilted shit, no pontificating or other huffy-puffy, high-fallutin' crap. You must have been in those same staff meetings...

And funny enough - this was the really hilarious part to me - whenever I went on the air, there were people, usually men, who swore I was blonde. Don't know why. I certainly wasn't. But that's how they thought I sounded.

Thanks for your kind words! Warms the ol' cockles...

35. True, it's the same as with singing solo & acting. It's all performing
for an audience of many but addressing it to the one whether with your voice or with writing. B-)

Funny you should mention people swearing you were blonde :D ... I've always been complemented on my voice (singing & speaking) as well. When I worked for a telephone answering service I had male customers ask for me just to hear my voice, using the CB back in the late 70's & 80's truckers loved me (Blue Angel) and when I took drama in college as a returning adult I quickly became known as the one with "the 900# voice". ;) (With me men would guess that I was a sultry redhead... well one out of two wasn't to bad. ;))

We fellow cat lovers and performers have to stick together so from our furkids to you and yours here's wishing that you achieve your fondest dreams and desires. :yourock: B-)

16. Hear hear
Hear hear is an expression which originated as hear him, usually repeated. This imperative was used to call attention to a speaker's words, and naturally developed the sense of a broad expression of favor. This is how it is still used today, although one can always vary one's tone to express different sentiments; the Oxford English Dictionary noted around the turn of the century that the phrase, is now the regular form of cheering in the House of Commons, and expresses, according to intonation, admiration, acquiescence, indignation, derision, etc.

As a parliamentary cheer, hear him, hear him! is first recorded in the late 17th century and continued into the 19th; the reduction to hear! or hear, hear! occurred by the late 18th century. However, the use of the verb hear as an imperative meaning listen! is older: a notable example is the parliamentary-sounding Then cried a wise woman out of the city, Hear, hear (King James Bible, 2 Samuel xx 16).

Aside from the interjection, a number of other forms are found, such as a hear, hear (originally, of course, a hear him) 'a cheer'; hear-hear 'to shout "hear, hear!"'; and hear-hearer 'a person who shouts "hear, hear!"'. :)

to run out. Nobody with that kind of jack-ass personality, insensitivity, arrogance, pettiness, vindictiveness, just-plain-meanness, greed, and selfishness deserves the kind of breaks and the seemingly endless free ride he enjoys.

Maybe if you look up "Life isn't fair" in the encyclopedia, his picture is what you see.

My best friend, who's had a lifelong series of bad breaks, has said she sometimes wonders if maybe in an earlier life, she ran over God's dog or something. Makes me wonder what bush may have done in an earlier life. He's learning NOTHING of value from this one.

BTW, thanks - and MANY hugs! :toast:

46. And there, in a nutshell, is why I don't believe in "karma" and
all the other new-agie things that people l-o-v-e to say. It just doesn't pan out in real life.

"ran over God's dog" !!! That is wonderful! Please let your friend know that really gave me just the cheer I needed, and I'll be quoting that! What a wonderful sense of humor, and sharp mind!

It should be quite obvious that the rich are protected, and the rest of us take our lumps. People in the past knew that, but the rise of the middleclass has muddied that vision. The only good thing to come of this mess is some of the muddleclass now seeing that it doesn't have to do with how "good" you've been -- it has to do with who has the power, and how they chose to use it.

That's a lesson that I hope is learned well and deep, because this is one person who is really SICK of hearing all the judgments towards poor people coming out of the mouths of muddleclass people, INCLUDING those who consider themselves "progressive"!

Thus endeth the sermon.... we will now take the collection and sing the hymn of the day... ~~gigglesnort~~

24. Nice job Mar. But remember... it wasn't Bush**'s failure...
It was the failure of the conservative philosophy itself. Bush** performed admirably by the RW's standard: YOYO. You're on your own, unless you're rich.

Visualize. Then DO.
