1. I'm from Illinois and I would not vote for him for president.
Dick Durbin is a far better senator, a better leader and a better man.
Barack is too concerned about image, and not substance.

5. "Barack is too concerned about image, and not substance." snark!
Hard to wrap my brain around that one -- a politician worried about image.

11. image to the exclusion of substance.
Durbin ain't pretty. He is a stilted speaker. He is a bit hefty. His voice whines. But, he is a dedicated public servant. I've met him many times, and dealt with him repeatedly. The difference between Durbin and the pretty boy is huge.

3. Done! 46.86% Yes
Would you vote for Senator Barack Obama for president?
Yes - 46.86%
No - 53.14%

Interestingly, Hillary Clinton seems to rank in second place after "Other", as either presidential or vice presidential running mate.

And the poll asks if we'd want Al Gore as Obama's VP Candidate.

Can Al Gore legally be VP again?

I remember reading a while ago that Bill Clinton can be Vice president. People have speculated over the fact that Hilary may choose Bill as her running mate & this will seal the election in her favor.

4. How can I take his poll seriously when it names Republican running mates?
Remember the rumors that Kerry was going to choose John McCain--and the accusations of him being a flip-flopper when he didn't?

9. N.O. - so far, everytime he opens his mouth, it confirms my negative
opinion of him.

If he had an "r" after his name instead of "d", we'd be crucifying him uniformly.

He's WAY overrated...

12. My opinion is he's not ready to be President yet...
He's not experienced enough yet.

To be completely frank, our country may not be ready to vote for anyone but a WHITE CHRISTIAN MALE for that position for a very long time. I despair for us in that regard. I had hoped to see a female and/or a person of color as our President in my lifetime, but I truly do not think that will happen, and it pains me to say so.

20. The country will never be ready for anything else (WM) until we HAVE
a viable minority candidate,be it a minority male or a female. I believe that the party that produces such a candidate will be rewarded with a victory. It is a question of vision.

that could give us (arguably) another 8 years of Republican rule, well... I can't stop you.

But, I am unwilling to do that.

Even if Obama was white, I would still think he had not had enough experience to run, but with the subject of racial decriminiation still such a horrible reality for this nation, why give them a weapon to use against us? They are building walls to keep Hispanics out of this country. They allowed an entire city of mostly Black and poor to drown. Most of this country doesn't give a rat's a** about either of those things. Do you really think Republicans, Southern Democrats, and Red State Independents are going to come over to our side to vote for a Black man at this time in history??? The horrible truth is NO, THEY WON'T. And we are just kidding ourselves if we think they will.

25. Not sure how you drew that conclusion from my post. I was arguing
your point that only white males could get elected. I did not say I was pinning my hopes on Obama. What I said was that the party that comes up with a VIABLE minority candidate is going to win, Dixiecrats et al. notwithstanding. Obama probably isn't that candidate for President in 2008, but he might be in 2016 after an 8 year stint as VP.

16. What is it that makes him so fine?
Seriously. No snark intended.

I cannot think of one thing he has accomplished. He talks the talk, then sits and waits until everyone else is walking before he makes a move.

He claims to be interested in less partisan strife, but that alone as a policy seems to be a dead end, especially in today's neocon reality.

21. Combining post 16 and 17 makes sense
but this magazine is hardly a good basis for the discussion. Who would such a magazine like, Arnold for the flex poses and great suits and cigars?

We have several candidates with great qualifications but lacking the hard-nosed political machinery or skills to BEGIN the real fight for the presidency. I try to resist attacking these fine individuals because they find themselves carrying tennis rackets to a knife fight. This has been going on a long time, the self-disarming of Dems. Cuomo gave a great speech, a real springboard after the Al Smith type defeat of Mondale. Then he got beaten down by the DLC southern strategy Dems and Dukakis was standing there in his place! How in unholy hades did that happen? If you get tamed and cowed in your own party what hope is there in the Gutter leagues of GOP hardball?

So we have principled non-starters like Kucinich with the luxury of speaking his mind passionately and elegantly, mainstream and military appeal, brains and charisma and populist appeal, and not enough political sense in the aggregate to see the headlights coming down the middle of the road. So much potential, so little leadership results. That is a scandalous puzzle. Are they even frustrated in the caution trap? I guess they figure messiahs just get nailed and maybe they are right, but this is what the best of America has to show?

31. In a knife fight,
a tennis racket would actually be a pretty good weapon. I think that Obama is still a junior senator. In spite of what people thibk, it takes a while to learn the lay of the land. He had a pretty good record as an Illinois senator, didn't he? Give him time. And no, I don't think half way through his first term is time enough.

32. Agreed
This is a tough time to make a start. And what kind of record can you make as a minority party in THIS Congress? This has been hard all around for a lot of fine reps with long careers under GOP dominance.

The question for each of us is what we are going to do not what some wunderkind will pull a rabbit out of the hat to let us relax on the TV couch.

33. What a thoroughly STUPID poll.
First of all, there's no way Obama is going to be the 2008 nominee. Too young, too inexperienced. 2016? Maybe. Let's see what he can do in the meantime.

Second, there's way too many Republicans on that poll. And not just the ones with (R) after their name. Let's have some DEMOCRATIC choices. Geezus..... who publishes that shit magazine anyway? Murdoch? TimeAOLWarnerCIA?
