My conversation with a freeper neighbor's friend...
Edited on Sun Aug-27-06 07:34 PM by jhuth
This happened Thursday evening.

I was taking out the garbage Thursday when some guy comes barging our of my neighbors house urgently walking to the fence with an open handshake hand urgently wanting to introduce himself and oh by the way he asked me "I just wanna know what kind of a person drives around with bumper stickers on his car that are so misguided". He went on and on about how misguided and unrealistic my bumper stickers are and used talking point after talking point. "Fight them over there or they'll follow us here" etc.

His tone was so freeperish I didn't really even want to start this shit, I wasn't in the mood for a debate. I told him that he lived in his bubble and I live in mine and I don't feel like discussing it. As I walked away I got the "what do you know you don't know anything about the war you stupid moron" treatment. He was trying to bully his way into an argument.

As I told him again that I didn't want to debate him I heard my neighbor, inside his house eavesdropping, laughing loud, as his friend yelled at me "The Democrats don't have a PLAN, tell me what the plan is , tell me some facts", shouting over me as I tried to make some progress toward a real discussion. We should have started with port security.

I was fairly pissed off at his attempt to do the "humiliate a lefty" routine. I simply told him, look pal, there's going to be a shift to the left in politics that's going to last a generation, and went back into the house.

Later that evening I was cleaning my pet's cage and was outside for like one minute when he comes out again. "I can tell I pissed you off" he says. "Look at you trembling you don't have any idea what the world is like do you, you don't have a plan". (good grief) So since I was calmed down I said to him that Democrats have a lot of good ideas, the problem is the Righties don't want to listen.

"Well I'm not a rightie, I'm an Independent"

As it turns out he's served 5 years in Iraq, and told me all the good news about Iraq. The conversation took a turn to the left when I brought up the fact that Rumsfelt didn't send enough troops. He agreed.

From there I explained a little bit about Able Danger (he never heard of it)Halliburton and Cheney's role as CEO until he was Vice President (he never heard of it, surprising that he's in the Military and never heard of that). Then I got into the PNAC and who was a member during the 90's, and that they needed a "Pearl Harbor type event" to further the agenda (he never heard of it). I brought up the "Bin Laden Determined To Strike The US" PDF, and his comment was "The President sees 100's of documents like that every day". Well ok, but I explained that if Al Gore was President and he saw a document like that before 9/11 he would have been publicly humiliated and impeached probably before the end of 2001, and he agreed with me on that point.

I really though I had made some progress with this chip-on-his-shoulder soldier who initially acted like Sean Hannity (he never heard of him either, how strange).

Later that night we and our other neighbors heard a huge very loud shouting match in our freeper neighbors house. The chip-on-his-shoulder guy left soon after.

Not long after that I found a bullet hole in my van. I can't help but think he shot my van. I have no proof, and the police told me they need more proof and can't pursue anything, but said to keep my eyes open and please call immediately if I ever hear gun shots.

The whole ordeal was just crazy. This was my first and only heated debate with a rightie. I didn't like that one bit.

As far as the Democrats plan goes, I can sum up a good plan with one word .... "Accountability". Accountability for mistakes, for lies, for secrets and for all the corruption. That's a "talking point" that speaks volumes.

Here's my van.

My favorite sticker on my van. The background pic was taken the Monday Katrina struck, just after 11:00 Arizona time, during his discussion of medicare. It shows clearly what Bush's priority was while people were dying.

There's the bullet hole. The chip-on-the-shoulder guy was parked right behind my van. The bullet's only damage is that hole, luckily. I tried to find the bullet but it must be down in the frame somewhere, there's no hole inside my van.

AM I afraid? NO!! The stickers STAY, my head stays held high, and I continue to do what I can to help us win this fall.

4. Delusional people react violently when their delusions are pointed out.
That's definitely a bullet hole. And that's just the result of
a CONVERSATION, just your OPINION.
What do you imagine will happen when REALITY ITSELF intrudes
so much that the Freeper Bubble-Delusion becomes unsustainable?
When the FACTS can no longer be avoided with some tough talk and
back-slapping?

And it WILL intrude, you know; B*sh has already screwed this country
past the point of collapse; it's just COASTING due to its immense
momentum. But every day, in every way, things are getting WORSE.

People like your neighbor are the reason I own firearms myself.

15. That's the mark of an UNDEVELOPED mind.
Edited on Sun Aug-27-06 07:44 PM by dicksteele
The inability to admit ANY possibility that any
opinion he holds could be even slightly less than correct.
The TOTAL LACK of the ability to dispassionatly EVALUATE.

In my experience, it is not possible to 'reason' with such
people, because reason has NOTHING to do with their opinions.
Their 'opinions' are merely parroted phrases; phrases they
adopt from an emotional Pack-Mentality LOYALTY to whatever
group they have chosen to identify with.

These people don't actually do anything that you or I would
recognize as "thinking". I do not say that as a snarky insult;
I have come to believe that it is literally TRUE.

Their 'thinking' does not extend very far past the oldest,
most basic parts of the cerebellum- the so-called "lizard brain".
This is the center of EMOTIONS, and what little "thinking" it
does causes the simplest human "drives": Avoid pain & unpleasant
feelings, seek pleasure and pleasant feelings.

The forebrain, what we call "the MIND", never became dominant
over the emotions as is expected in normal human development.
As such, it is incapable of introspection or dispassionate evaluation
of data. All new data is immediatly categorized according to
the black/white, like/dislike filing system of the lizard brain.

And the mind subservient to the base instincts in this manner
serves as nothing but an INTERFACE for the lizard brain.
There is no "conscious thought", because the most basic TOOLS
necessary for conscious thought are not present;
they never developed.

Their "mind" is not truly a mind, but merely an incredibly complex
system of interlocking stimulus/response loops existing only
to serve the basest needs of their inner 2-year-old.

the political climate we face in America, so insightful. I may just use the term Lizard Brain on Dumbosaurus.

I invite you to visit my site. I wrote the music there. It has not been updated recently due to us moving into our new house. This incident certainly will motivate me to compose some new songs and update the site with new pics.

25. Well, I did not invent the term "lizard brain".
I gave this page a quick 'once-over'; it seems to
be a fairly even-handed summation of the 3-layer
construction of the human brain.
It's some very BASIC info which explains alot
about who we are and why we do what we do.
http://www.crystalinks.com/reptilianbrain.html

And I will certainly visit your site. However, my sweetie
just finished her book and has suggested that we spend some
time together on the sofa, so my own 'reptillian brain' just
kicked all internet-based activity down a notch on its
internal 'to do' list.

And about 2 seconds of 'Dispassionate Evaluation' put my
forebrain in TOTAL agreement!
So I am off to the sofa; your site is BOOKMARKED until later.

33. The simplest cartoon sketches stand out most clearly on blank slates.
The military works with what it is given.

"Brainwashing" works to the extent that the recipient
is RECEPTIVE to being brainwashed.
The military mindset is very SEDUCTIVE to humans who
do not think, but it does not CREATE them.

The Military USES them to the extent to which they
are USEFUL; and they are useful up to a point.
But it doesn't MAKE the mindless drones, and
it doesn't promote them to any serious positions
of authority if it can help it.

There are many DUers who have served in the military,
some of them for decades. They had functioning MINDS
when they went in, and they have functioning minds today.

Thay are in a much better position to explain this
to you than I am. I was NEVER 'fit for service',
and that's a FACT.

I certainly would not know. I just wonder. I have met some that were, and some that were not. For some reason the ones I have seen with the most indoctrination were the Marines, but then I have also met some very liberal Marines. They DO tend to be from the older generations, though. But; I don't have a lot of experience with this.

57. Re: And that's just the result of a CONVERSATION, just your OPINION.
I'm like the original poster, Jhuth, I use bumper stickers to tell a story. I have six on the back window of my minivan. It starts off with, "Warned of the attacks of 9-11, Bush did Nothing" and ends with "Bush belongs behind bars".

I'm forever having to defend and explain my bumper stickers. To be honest, it drives me crazy that our democratic leaders have put us in the position where we have to dress our cars like loonies in order to enlighten half our nation. Now I know, it's the republicans who put us where we are, but why can't democrats speak in a loud unified voice and easily bring down this White House?

It scares me to think that maybe our democratic leaders don't want to address the Carlyle Group, United Defense, HALLIBURTON, and so on because they don't want their stock portfolios made an issue.

I wrote a letter to democratic candidates in the thread below, I hope it gets in the right hands.

It's not like I drive around with BUSH=ANTICHRIST on the van like I used to. It is election season. Someday the time will be absolutely right for you to safely apply your DU sticker.

There will be a time when the right is going to be SO embarassed when the find out the facts about Bush that are being whitewashed by their party. Chip-on-the-shoulder guy has never heard of PNAC, or Halliburton, or Able Danger. If he read about these issues and found out the facts about them, I think he would be quite embarassed.

I told my Mom today about how strong I believe truth is, that although it may take some time, the truth will eventually stand. That is my "faith".

Mom said she believed that once when she was in her 40's, but not anymore (she's 70). I can't be so pessimistic, at least not yet.

And I agree, there's nothing provocative about your stickers. Now Bush=Antichrist, that might get you lynched in Oklahoma. You could at least expect a burning cross in your yard. As far as optimism goes, well I'm turning 57, and I wish I still had the optimism of my youth. I'm probably closer to your mom on that score. The guy you described seems like a mindless psychopath to me. I'm not so sure he could handle the truth if he had the intellectual curiosity to seek it.

But don't let me discourage you. You're an inspiration. Keep the faith, brother, but watch your ass.

To not put it on is giving into fear. Essentially, it would be giving into the terrorism that this man (and others) have created by attacking freedoms of expression. To me, it is important to display SOMETHING, because to others, a lack of opinion is is viewed as approval.

Our plan?? Don't fuck up! Don't use the nation's enemies to demonize the other political party! Because anyone who does that is doing the enemy's work for them. Sadly, in this case: on purpose.

Don't offer theories about who did it or why, just stick to the facts. If it was done intentionally then whoever did it is not balanced and for all you know he's been shooting at other vehicles with political messages that offend him. The cops need to know in case there is a pattern.

if he wasn't we'd have $3 plus gas, endless war and the middle east would be on fire. It's so easy to back GWB by saying everything is great and better than they would tell you and most idiots will than try to correct you.

58. I have the same feelings
In almost every conflict in the world it seems like the conservatives are the ones who first raise the guns. The fundamental extremists of the middle east are conservatives. Who know what the neocons may do when the loose the House. People like hannity, Savage & Limbaugh are making the US less safe. It seems like the guy you spoke to uses all their talking points. Even though he may not know Hannity, I am sure he knows Rush or Savage or just watches Fox News. Please be safe. Do not take any risks.

50. This guy is now torqued..
... because he is beginning to face the fact that he was used and he's not happy.

Before he can accept that fact, he will strenuously argue that he did NOT waste years of his life being a pawn in a fucked game. Someday, he will admit it to himself, but in the meantime he will get really angry as he is pushed each step, kicking and screaming, towards that inevitable conclusion.

I don't see how the shot wasn't heard. Maybe he used a silencer, which is probably illegal.

51. Mike Malloy had the best response regarding the "plan" nonsense
It's like you have a very nice sports car that your friend asks to borrow. You give him the keys and he immediately hands them to a monkey sitting behind the wheel. The monkey puts the car into gear, then drives down the block wreaking havoc--running over trees, people, smashing into houses, crashing through a department store window doing hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage--until finally the car smashes into a fire hydrant and comes to rest, water spraying everywhere.

Then your friend turns to you, angry, and says, "Well, what's your plan?"

Yeah, it's like that.

60. Here's a suggestion...
Next time you see him, just give him a friendly wave and stop for chit-chat. You could say something like: "Did you hear what happened to my van? Some guy shot it! I did call the cops but they turned the investigation over to the Department of Homeland Security because they felt I was being targeted because of my political beliefs. Can you imagine that? DHS dug the bullet out of the inside and they are keeping it on file in case another one turns up that's a match. Isn't that weird?" Watch the guy's face go all white when you mention DHS trying to match the "bullet." Heh. Nonconfrontational, but lets him think they'll come after him if he tries anything like that again.

you're a freak. Your behavior wouldn't have been acceptable, no matter what the subject."

Don't your neighbors realize that y'all have to live next to each other?

Hopefully he was arguing with them, and left, because they told him off regarding starting shit with their neighbors that they'd have to live with. But somehow I doubt it.

I had a confrontation with some nutty woman who said she was a psychic, and was also a Bushbot. What I should have said was "Then tell me what I'm thinking right now" and walked away. She acted like it was disloyal of me to even have my Kerry 08 sticker on. What, democracy a problem tootz.

But anyway, I still say, apart from politics, his attitude was just plain unacceptable in polite society. I wouldn't have engaged him in any political discussion at all and would have just stuck to the point that he was being an ass, regardless. Or I'd have tried to. More likely I'd have been trembling like you. But just because I hate conflict and confrontation.

I wonder if "Get out of my face or I'll call the cops and tell them you're harrassing me" would have worked.

On edit: here's the back of MY car. I live in Sensenbrenner's district, so I do get the comments here and there. And my stickers are pretty middle of the road, I'd say.

I often try to make my point peacefully but it seems the freepers get so bent out of shape when it comes to political conversations.

What is it about these freepers who appear mentally bent?

71. Here's a suggestion, NO words needed
Try this on your cars instead of regular bumper stickers. Yes these people are violent and there are crazys among them, why antagonize. Get the DVD "V" For Vendetta the similarities of what's happening in America today will shock you.
.
Just put this on your cars:
.
"V" For Vendetta...
""
.
Just a small sticker with profound meaning.
.
People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people.
.
You can get a mask here:
.
If enough people do this word will soon get out.
.
We've all seen these "fish" stickers well this will work similarly. Many people are doing just that right now you'd be surprised.

of fake wars. from the war on Christmas the culture war, the war on easter, the war on family values, war war war! It's no wonder they want to preserve their right to bear arms. they are a wolf pack of wussies who are so so afraid of everything and anything that represents liberal values.

Global warming is a hoax but the end of times is legitimate? Evolution is a liberal conspiracy but we were formed from lumps of clay?

Intelectuals are STUPID!!

What has happened to the shining light on the hill? It has burned out.

It is up to US to light that beacon of hope!!

Right now I have optimism, but I think if America doesn't change that hope will die.

74. Please tell me you called the cops
Most Minnesota cities have laws against the discharge of a firearm within city limits, this may qualify as criminal harassment, property damage, or maybe even terroristic threats (oh the irony). They should be able to do a ballistics test on the bullet. Stay on the cops, this is a squeaky wheel gets the invetigative grease kind of question.
