Change Dems symbol from a donkey to a dog!
I don't like the donkey. I think a dog is much better. Mans best friend, Man's companion, Brave and protects when need be. Loving, adaptable The big tent with all of the kind of dogs that there are.

Snakes should be for the Pubs, if they change.

1. don't forget loyalty (hmmm, Lieberman?)
However, the stubbornness of the donkey--unwillingness to "conform" to the will of others, is rather fitting, you have to admit.

Love doggies though...Dog is God, right? Then we can make the case that GOD has chosen the Democrats!

2. A big ol` golden retriever!!
Frankly an ass is really a bad symbal. How did that ever come to be? Gator would be a good one for the repbs. Aren`t they trying to get rid of the gators in Fla.??? What we really need for our symbal is a T-Rex!!

4. No, the Democrats' donkey predates the Republican party.
For its history, go the the Democratic Party's web site:

http://www.democrats.org/a/2005/06/history_of_the.php

"When Andrew Jackson ran for president in 1828, his opponents tried to label him a "jackass" for his populist views and his slogan, "Let the people rule." Jackson, however, picked up on their name calling and turned it to his own advantage by using the donkey on his campaign posters. During his presidency, the donkey was used to represent Jackson's stubbornness when he vetoed re-chartering the National Bank."

"The first time the donkey was used in a political cartoon to represent the Democratic party, it was again in conjunction with Jackson. Although in 1837 Jackson was retired, he still thought of himself as the Party's leader and was shown trying to get the donkey to go where he wanted it to go. The cartoon was titled 'A Modern Baalim and his Ass. ..."

You reminded me of this website someone turned me on to last year -- Dem Donkeys!! It's awesome! They make necklaces out of original FDR Dem Donkeys!!

Check it out!

I ended up having a lovely email exchange with one of the women there, and she made me a necklace to order! It's killer!

6. the symbol derives from the cartoons...
...of Thomas Nast, the late 19th C. political/editorial cartoonist for NY Herald Tribune (?), who also bequeathed the elephant to the GOP. Ironicly, Nast was responsible for the arrest of Boss Tweed (of NYC's Tammany Hall) when Tweed skipped the country to avoid indictment for his crimes--Italian immigration officials recognized him from the cartoons (not his passport), detained and held him until US Consular officials could officially ID him for extradition. As for a new mascot, i'd recommend something one usually finds squashed in the middle of the road...like a possum or armadillo...

19. Both symbols came from cartoonist Thomas Nash
He also drew Santa Claus with red suit in illustrations of "The Night Before Christmas. (Known only because I once lived in Morristown, NJ - where he lived and where some of the prints are still shown.

27. Forget the damn Golden Retriever--make it a Pit Bull
If we want to toughen the Dems' image, we need a rough, tough canine symbol to match it--and the pit bull's rep for being tough, tenacious, and never giving up fills the bill.

5. NoNoNo!! Change donkey to a *Bad Ass*...
Like this guy ... sent to me in an e-mail just today.

========================

This may be a first...

A couple from Montana were out riding on the range, he with his rifle and she (fortunately) with her camera. Their dogs always followed them, but on this occasion a Mountain Lion decided that he wanted to stalk the dogs (you'll see the dogs in the background watching). Very, very bad decision...

The hunter got off the mule with his rifle and decided to shoot in the air to scare away the lion, but before he could get off a shot the lion charged in and decided he wanted a piece of those dogs. With that, the mule took off and decided he wanted a piece of that lion. That's when all hell broke loose... for the lion.

As the lion approached the dogs the mule snatched him up by the tail and started whirling him around. Banging its head on the ground on every pass. Then he dropped it, stomped on it and held it to the ground by the throat. The mule then got down on his knees and bit the thing all over a couple of dozen times to make sure it was dead, then whipped it into the air again, walked back over to the couple (that were stunned in silence) and stood there ready to continue his ride... as if nothing had just happened.

Fortunately even though the hunter didn't get off a shot, his wife got off these 4.

We Dems just need to trade in our gentle donkey mascot for this Bad-Aass mule!

can kill a donkey -- however a mountain lion THAT size could not kill a donkey that size.

and while snipes states that donkeys are formidable -- unless you've spent time around them -- you simply have no idea...

donkeys are REALLY formidable.

20. A mule, a significant difference really.
Mules are really quite neat. If I were forced to ride an animal, I would choose a mule. It has many advantages over a horse in my mind and I have ridden both, my Dad kept horses. (I preferred motorcycles). I haven't been around many donkeys, save a few adopted ones saved from the federal lands. They were completely feral.

It never even occurred to me that this might be untrue and I normally check out anything even remotely suspicious at Snopes.

Ah, well.

I still favor keeping a "Bad-Ass" as the Dem mascot, though! Even Snopes agrees, "a mule can be quite an adversary."

39. Change the Republican symbol to the White Elephant
The donkey is a strong, intelligent, frugal, working class beast. He's the perfect symbol for the Democratic Party.

As for the Republicans, I believe that they should alter thier symbol a bit in order to reflect both the reality that the Republican Party is mostly white and also that keeping Republicans in office is going to bankrupt the country--sort of like when those ancient kings would send their political enemies the sacred white elephant because the care required of the animal would put anyone in the poorhouse.

40. I once saw a mare do that to a Great Dane who attacked her foal
It was not a pretty sight. The mare bowled the dog over, picked him up in her mouth like he was a kitten and smashed him to the ground.

The dog survived only because the foal fell down and screamed for his mother who broke off stomping the dog into pulp to care for her baby. Even so the dog suffered a broken leg and a couple of broken ribs. Some people were able to get in and grab the dog and get it out of the mare's sight while the rest of us caught and reassured the mare and checked the foal.

I've seen one other horse attack a predator and it was the same basic attack. The mare was a mustang and the other horse was a tough studish apaloosa pony both of who may have had more survival instincts than the average domestic horse.

8. If you don't like the donkey
Edited on Sat Aug-26-06 05:40 PM by chastitybeaverhausen
you have never known a donkey. I have three donkeys and they are incredible animals. They are gentle, resilient, intelligent, brave, determined, beautiful animals. Donkeys are NOT stubborn, they simply refuse to blindly follow or be led into a situation they deem dangerous. You can't run a donkey until it drops like you can a horse. They will stop to rest before they drop dead or become exhausted. A donkey will not blindly charge forward into a dangerous situation. They are not flighty or stupid and must think before they enter an unknown situation. That is neither stubborn or stupid. That is smart. Donkeys protect each other. They are used to guard other animals from predators. Donkeys are sure footed, cautious and brave. They use donkeys to take people to the bottom of the Grand Canyon because they are smart, sure footed and won't bolt or act stupid. Donkeys were bred with horses to get mules to use in agriculture before the advent of the tractor. The mule got the size of the horse combined with the even temperedness, resilience and intelligence of the donkey. The donkey is a proud and beautiful animal and the perfect symbol for the Democratic party. They will also kick the living shit out of opponents, unlike a horse which will go berserk and hurt itself running thru a fence to escape and opponent.

34. Not all of them are "gentle,"
although I agree with most of the rest.

When I kept my horses at someone else's place, they were housed next door to a minidonkey. A mini stud. He was loud and obnoxious, braying incessantly every time someone walked by, leading one small toddler to turn, face him, and say "I don't like you. You scream at me!"

He was an escape artist, and had a wicked sense of humor. I showed up one day to find no one home, but the donkey loose. I caught him, put him in his pen, and before I had the gate latched he was out underneath the bottom rail. I don't know how he fit his solid little self through an 8" opening, but he did. He ran around in circles, braying, and waiting for me to catch him. I spent some time at the wood pile, and piled some unsplit logs along the opening, then caught him and put him back in. He was out again before the gate was latched. I swear he was laughing. I then resorted to rocks. No good. So finally I put him in the round pen, which had solid sides and gate. He was furious, and proceeded to spend the next hour calling and kicking the sides of the pen.

In addition to intelligence and sense of humor, he was a bully. He killed a few ranch dogs, dogs that did not chase or harrass anyone. Which is why it was important to keep him penned.

On the other hand, I found a couple of stud donkeys out on the highway last spring, and herded them onto a little side road. Then I went and got my horse trailer, and they loaded up happily without a rope or halter in site. They spent 3 days at my place while we worked to find out where they belonged, and they did not bray or become aggressive at any time. I would have given them a home if we hadn't finally found their human.

24. How about Doves, Donkeys and Dogs?
Doves to signify peace
Donkeys to signify kicking ass or determination
Dogs...including the German Shephard as the loyal guard of the rest of us.

Staying power and determination is what I think of when I think of a donkey. Here are some definitions for those who want to know everything.

Donkey Definition:

1. animal resembling small horse: a small domesticated member of the horse family with a gray or brown coat, long ears, and a large head. :kick:
-----------------

Mule Definition:

1. cross between horse and donkey: the offspring of a female horse and a male donkey

2. hybrid animal or plant: the sterile offspring of two closely related species of animal or plant

3. stubborn person: somebody regarded as stubborn or intractable ( informal )
----

Ass

Definition:

1. animal resembling horse with long ears: an animal resembling a small horse with long ears, sometimes used as a beast of burden.

The donkey is a domesticated descendant of the wild ass. Genus Equus.

36. Change Dems symbol from a donkey to a dog!
Edited on Sun Aug-27-06 09:05 AM by Totally Committed
Why?.... Because dogs can roll over and play dead, and donkey's can't?

Sounds about right for some Dems these days. The dems I support would be the loyal, courageous, protective, and earstwhile dogs whose love and respect for people who treat them well is always obvious, and who are ready, willing, and able to fight for their lives for what they believe is right.

I love dogs too much to saddle them with representing the feeble, cowardly, mamby-pamby elected Dems that we mostly find today.

If we take the dog as our symbol, we need to be willing to emulate their finer qualities!
