GOP stalwart faces fraud allegations (Conrad Burns related)

HELENA — Billings businessman Pat Davison, who ran for the Republican Party nomination for governor in 2004, is under investigation for securities fraud, the state auditor's office confirmed Friday.

Davison is accused of persuading two families to invest $1.2 million into fake accounts he created, State Auditor John Morrison said. At least some of the complaints alleged the activity occurred during the same period Davison was seeking his party's nomination to run for governor.

Davison was most recently the volunteer co-chairman of Conrad Burns' re-election finance committee. The Burns campaign said Davison resigned July 27 for personal reasons. The Burns campaign did not have comment other than to confirm Davison was in a fundraising position.
