Rich Galen has been described as "what you get when you cross a political hack with a philosopher."

His career includes work in and out of politics, in and out of the United States.

Rich did a tour of duty in Iraq where he went at the request of the White House. The assignment - which was to have lasted about eight weeks, stretched into six months. While there, he was responsible for bringing the message of the positive aspects of what the coalition was doing in Iraq back to Middle America.

Rich has been press secretary to Dan Quayle, when the former Vice President was a Congressman and a U.S. Senator; and to Newt Gingrich when Gingrich was House Republican Whip and, in 1996 became the communications director of the political office of Speaker Gingrich.

HANNITY: Joining us now, nationally syndicated radio talk show host Larry Elder and Republican strategist Rich Galen.

First of all, how much does a guy that said this city will be a "chocolate city," a predominant African-American city, how does he get re- elected? I'm just having a hard time grasping that, Larry.

LARRY ELDER, ABC RADIO NETWORK: It's a tough one, Sean. The Teflon mayor strikes again. Remember, the first time he ran, he got very little black support. He would not have won without substantial white support.

So Katrina happens. All of a sudden now it's racism and it's about Bush. He becomes the mayor, a victim. He runs again, and he gets substantial black support and very little white support.

HANNITY: Yes, what would happen...

ELDER: What he did was he ran against the man. I remember years ago, Sean, there was a mayor of Philadelphia named Frank Rizzo. He said, "Vote white." And that was roundly condemned as a racist statement. Referring to New Orleans as a chocolate city and that's the way God wanted it to be is an outrage, yet he got re-elected.

He was incompetent. Those buses were underwater. He was the first responder. They had an evacuation plan; they didn't follow it. This guy has no business being in office. I thought he was a bad first-term mayor. He turns out now with this ridiculous remark, likening an act of war to an act of God, to become an even worse second-term mayor.

HANNITY: Yes.

Rich Galen, if somebody said, "This city will be a vanilla city," what would their political future be? You're a great political strategist, Rich.

RICH GALEN, REPUBLICAN STRATEGIST: Yes, it would be bad, but, I mean, that happens a lot. I mean, there's...

HANNITY: A vanilla city?

GALEN: There's no such thing as a white lawyer's association or anything like that. But that's OK, because whites are in control of stuff, and I think we have a certain advantage kind of built in.

2. Well, its true.
There's no white lawyer's association because white people already run the regular lawyer's association along with pretty much everything else. Jesse Jackson couldn't have said it better.

4. Grrr that damn lie about the buses again
Those buses were BROKEN!! IF they ran, there weren't even enough to evacuate the residents. But they did not run!!! I can see it now. All those buses full of people, just sitting there, while the waters rise. That would have been a lovely picture.

7. And what he said is wrong because....
He says white people have an advantage because white people by and large are in positions of power. I would say that is a correct statement. He doesn't follow it up with that is the way it should be or anything like that. He just says this is a fact. I didn't know pointing something out was a racist.

8. Oddly enough, Galen was actually defending the idea that minorities...
...should have exclusive professional associations. I agree. Minority groups require coalitions in order to have meaningful political, academic, and economic clout.

11. They did have an evacuation plan, they DID follow it!!!!!
Previous estimates were that only 40% to 60% of NOLA residents could be successfully evacuated in the event of a coming disaster. Estimates were that as many as 80% were successfully evacuated.

12. Well, I doubt they
are quibbling over what political future Macaca Allen has. If Allen gets re elected it will be because the white Republican voters gave hima pass on his remarks.

I didn't follow the NO mayor's race that closely but I do find "chocolate city" far less offensive than singling out a person and calling him macaca.

I'll bet Hannity has made all kinds of excuses for Allen. If these are the kind of whites that "are in control of stuff" I have every reason to be concerned.
