They were the only ones who could critique a medieval monarch (and even then, they could still get punished). It was a job that required brains, spontaneity, and plenty of "bells". Georgie wouldn't have lasted 5 seconds in Henry VIII's time.

(I love the cartoon, though. Same guy who did Bush on a rocking horse!)
