Two days after GOP Senate candidate Tom Kean Jr. announced an ambitious plan to create a more ethical Congress, his Democratic opponents say the would-be reformer should reform himself first.

Democrats allied with Kean's opponent, U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez, launched a concerted effort Wednesday designed to undermine the young Republican's call for transparency in government. Their focus was Kean's reluctance to detail the sources of a personal fortune largely inherited from his family.

"Mr. Kean wants one standard for himself and another standard for everyone else," said Democratic Rep. Rob Andrews of Camden County, who spoke for the Menendez campaign in a Trenton press conference. "He's the one who used the phrase 'make the political process more transparent.' "
