Ads in Casey/Santorum Race Get Nasty (Casey finally going statewide)

In the face of an apparently tightening race, the air war of the Pennsylvania U.S. Senate campaign turned tougher over the past 24 hours as both sides began TV ads assailing their opponent's record.

U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum was first to go on the broadcast offensive with a commercial poking fun at state Treasurer Bob Casey's work record and political history. Mr. Casey quickly responded with a commercial defending his record while criticizing the incumbent on Social Security, the minimum wage and his allegiance to President Bush.

The developments come after months in which the better-funded Mr. Santorum dominated the TV landscape in the state while Mr. Casey held the dominant position in public polling.

As of the last campaign expense reporting period, on June 30, the Republican had $9.4 million in cash on hand, while Mr. Casey reported $5.2 million.

Mr. Santorum's ad barrage preceded a narrowing of the polling advantage Mr. Casey has consistently held over the incumbent. A survey released by Franklin & Marshall College yesterday puts Mr. Casey's advantage at 5 percentage points. It is consistent with other public surveys that also show him in front, but by notably smaller margins than the double-digit edge he had earlier.

{i]I saw the Santorum Ad tonight and it is juvenile and nasty. BTW, anyone know the male announcer they use for these ads? Sounds like the same voice all the time to me. Makes me want to :puke:

1. I've not seen that ad, but I know what you mean.
Kind of slightly buttery, urgent, hoarsened, and somewhat confidential. Politicians view us as little more than numbers, to be manipulated and used.

2. I caught the Casey commercial this morning while watching
one of those morning talk/fake news shows. The one with Matt L.. The commercial is not bad, it bring home some important points about Samtorums record. What we need now is a commercial that also showcases Casey personality and highlights his honesty, integrity and his hardworking nature. Santorum was able to jump ahead for two reasons, one was, the Casey people were preoccupied with trying to invalidate signatures submitted by the Green candidate. (This is an old Repub trick, why Casey people weren't prepared for something like this is beyond me- especially after the dirty tactics used by the Repubs in 04)and second, while they were preoccupied, Santourm bombarded the airwaves with his commercials, played constantly, I might add, that tapped right into the senior population. Santorum is slick and he has a lot of money and power backing him. he plays the moderate during election time and it has worked well for him in years past. It is about time the Casey people started fighting back. The Republicans aren't just going to give us this Senate seat.

3. Yeah ...
It has gone about like I expected with ads ... I don't know if they didn't respond because they were dealing with the Greens thing, I just think that because of money, Casey had to let Santorum win the first media blitz uncontested ...

They showed the numbers above, Santorum has Casey nearly two to one in dollars ... Casey just couldn't reply to every Santorum media blitz ... Better to save up enough to close it out strong than burn it out early and not have anything left to respond when Santorum runs ads calling Casey a child molesting space alien ...

I was at the doctors with my other down in the Greensburg area (near Pittsburgh) two weeks ago, and in about 2 hours of TV exposure I saw the freakin Santorum ad with him in the dance hall with the seniors well over a half dozen times ... As noted, he REALLY is hitting the soft minded ... His ads up here in central PA, he talks about his efforts to boost the minimum wage and to save SS ... JESUS CHRIST ... People will believe that crap ...

We HAVE to have faith that people of PA FINALLY have woke up to what Santorum is ... At least enough to give this swarmy little freak no reason to step into this state again ...
