Is McCain's Wife a Democrat?
This isn't supposed to be some kind of endorsement of John McCain. I'm just curious whether this is true. I seem to recall during the '04 race, chatter that his wife and many of his children were backing Kerry (I definitely remember one story about his daughter refusing to speak to him for months because he endorsed Bush).

I'm quite sure about the daughter; can anybody else confirm or at least back me up on his wife?

1. she oughta be the way Rove smeared her in SC in the 2000 primaries
but alas I don't think so. She's from "Old Money"

3. Old Money? Bootleggers!

Would United States Senator John McCain be a presidential contender if it weren't for his marriage to Cindy Hensley McCain, heiress to the Hensley liquor fortune?

It's doubtful. The senator's wife and -- more important -- his father-in-law, James Willis Hensley, are very wealthy people.
snip>

But he retired from the military in 1980, divorced his first wife, wed Arizona native Cindy Lou Hensley and moved here to plunge into the world of politics. His first job in Arizona was as a public affairs agent for Hensley & Company, one of the nation's largest beer distributors. He was paid $50,000 in 1982 to travel the state, touting the company's wares. But he was promoting himself as much as he was Budweiser beer. A better job description might have been "candidate."
snip>
The Hensley saga, meanwhile, swirls with bygone accounts of illicit booze, gambling, horse racing, deceit and crime. James Hensley embarked on his road to riches as a bootlegger.

2. I don't know but I don't think they live together. I was surprised
when she showed up at the last Republic National convention with him. I don't think she will do much campaigning for him - she has been burned too many times and seems somewhat fragile.

9. Marriages of convenience
seems to be a common thing among the GOP..

Steve LaTourette - wife didn't even know how where he lived in DC, called his staff to get in touch with him

Duke - Stir Cunningham - she was happy as long as he was writing checks

John Ashcroft - sources in Missouri say his marriage has been over for years

those are just a few , I'm sure there are plenty more.

13. Blunt from Missouri ditched his longtime wife a couple years ago.
Dems should have lambasted him for his hypocrisy - he was a leader in attacking Clinton for his affair.

11. Are you sure about that? She's WAY younger than he is, if anyone
needs help, it's him. She's young enough to be his daughter. She did have that stroke a while back, http://www.azcentral.com/specials/special39/articles/0414mccain14.html --are you saying she's still in rough shape?

15. I meant emotionally fragile. I read a pc. on her last summer.
Don't remember what magazine but I think the Rove attack on her drug habit and dark skinned child in 2000 made her extremely reticent about being in the public view. I can't blame her

4. For the life of me...
I never understood how McCain could have forgiven that POS Rove and Bush for the Carolina campaign. And all the toadying he has done since.....I'd never vote for him for prez.....and I was ready to in the 2000 primary (just to get Bush off the GOP ticket mind you).

5. My mailbox
feels soiled. I got a mass mailing from McCain today billed as a survey on Global Warming which I did not read and immediately shredded it. I still can't figure out why he would send me anything.

writing to him about supporting one thing or another.

18. Me too - it was immediately recycled
I have no idea how they have my name as I never wrote him. He may have purchsed a mail list from an environmental group. It would make sense given the topic and it would let him expand his own list.

6. His wife and kids SHOULD support Kerry - He came to their defense in 2000
when they were being attacked and also kept McCain's head screwed on straight over the Vietnam normalization task that Kerry led and held McCain's hand for months to keep him from a breakdown.

If I was Mrs. McCain, I'd have publicly DUMPED THAT SonOfaBitch after he hugged Bush in 2000.

8. Does it matter?
GOP and their corporate sponsors rule with an iron fist. A wife's opinion isn't going to count for much.

17. his daughter voted for Kerry and at least one of his sons hates Bush
i don't think it's true of his wife though. i think she is probably apolitical mostly. maybe a Republican because her husband is. i thought it was weird how she had words that seemed far more sympathetic to Kerry when asked about the attacks on his service.

i was like "well, why are you with your husband when he is with the chimp". if she is apolitical then that might be why.

19. I think she was purely pro-McCain
but not willing to do anything to further her husband's career. As you and BLM upthread noted, Senator Kerry had been far more supportive to her and her husband than any other politician when Bush attacked in 2000. So, based on seeing her husband and herself smeared and knowing Kerry was a decent person, she was sympathetic to Kerry being smeared. The comments she made were likely as far as she could go without hurting her husband's chances.
