I am ashamed to admit this.
I live in Florida & just recently got my sample ballot for the Primaries & I don't have a friggin clue as to who any of the people are running for the Governor's slot.

I know all the ass-wipes running on the Republican side.

I have not seen any literature in the mail or ads on the tv?

3. Rod Smith is from my old haunts - Gainesville
Edited on Thu Aug-24-06 04:01 PM by SutaUvaca
I watched him "grow up" in the local judicial circles.
Taught chess to his son.
Rod seemed to be a straight shooter at whatever level in the system he was working. I remember good budgeting of resources, pretty good people manager. Articulate, frank and straight-forward speaking when interviewed by media. I think he prioritizes well also.
That's my take. I lived in the same community with him for 31 years.

6. Fair enough. Have more info?
For example, environmentalists REALLY don't seem to like Smith. Do you know why? Also, what of the large contributions from the sugar companies? I have found myself politically at odds with those guys on a number of issues since I moved to Florida. I am troubled that a Dem candidate might be beholden to them.

Futher, the charge has been made that Smith is very much a "Centrist", who seems to feel that compromising with Republicans is still a practical solution to political issues. In the debate recently he did nothing to dispel this idea (though I should comment that Davis is no liberal firebrand either). He looks a lot like a Bill Nelson style DINO. Is this accurate?

5. The Dem & rep gubernatorial debates

were on several PBS stations around the state Tues and Wed nights. I caught the Dems, didn't care anything about watching the crooks.

7. Its most likely to be Jim Davis.
The reason you are seeing the repugs duke it out is because they have a hot primary between two candidates who claim to be Bushie revivals. Anyway, Davis has the most money, the most % in the polls, and the most staff right now to handle the campaign. You will begin seeing the ads come hard after the primaries.

Davis isn't that bad of a candidate if he can deliver what he touts. He is big into jobs and better worker rights. Affordable living. Retaining good teachers. Listening to the teachers (i.e. not so heavy on the a,b,c, and d mentality, rather better quality). Doing something with insurance rates that are so sky-high. Not bad if you pester the hell out of him and make him stick to. Anyway, good luck with choosing! Its hard to pick a grass rooter in an election going up against Christ or Galagher. They are very well known, have deep pockets, and deep connections.

9. I've been getting calls from the local groups.
the ones running for school board and state district offices in St.Pete

I seen a few Ads for Smith and 1 for Davis where Bob Graham is endorsing him...but you are right ..the GOP are running attack ads .against each other.......If I were a GOP'er........I'd take Crist.........but being a Democrat.......I'm going to vote for Davis......

10. I voted for Davis
He's a good guy -- very smart, hardworking, honest, listens to constituents, correct on most issues (IMO), knows what he's doing.

The most often heard criticism of Davis is that he isn't a good speaker, but he's a quick study and has gotten SO much better since the campaign began. And, Davis absolutely owned the debate last night. There's some discussion in the Florida forum.
