What happens if, after November elections, we have:

49 republican senators
49 democratic senators
2 independents (I believe this is a possibility this year, no?)

???

This might be my ignorance showing, but the independents don't carry any weight even if they caucus with one party, right?

So who is in control of the senate, and how are the committees split? Flip a coin? Even days/Odd days? Street fight, winner takes all?

1. Both independents will have to caucus with the Dems for the Dems...
to have control.

2. Power sharing. Like after Jeffords defected.
Until the 2002 election, the Dems and GOP had a power sharing agreement.

3. Cheney still holds the tie breaker and the GOP still holds the ...
majority.

4. But if both Ind. senators caucus with the Dems, then no problem,
the Dems would be in the "majority', right? The Ind. senators will HAVE to caucus with one side or the other, won't they? Can they just stay in the middle and not choose sides?

5. Lieberman will be in play.
That is why a Lamont victory is the only acceptable outcome.

7. The pubbies still control the committees
and all the powerful chairmanships, that's what happens.

It is absolutely vital to defeat Lieberman.

8. Thanks everybody.
I was reading this thread by katinmn and it got me thinking about how important it is to defeat Lieberman from a sheer numbers perspective (not even taking into consideration the way he votes).

9. Cheney will not be in play if both I's caucus with the Dems.
The Dems will then have the votes to be in the majority.
Isn't this right? If not, why?
