Islamo-Fascism?.....Did I miss something?
Where did this term originate anyway?

It looks to me like a newly made up neocon term to point the finger away from their own dirty neo-fascist deeds. The term itself makes no sense to me...unless those who coined it have defined it for their own purposes. The term "Islamo"...based in the tradition of Islam and the term "fascism" when taken in its historic sense seem to be at odds with one another. I would even say diametrically opposed. Is this supposed to be the point?

I have not done a lot of research on it, but when the Shrub starts to use the term and the Repub talking heads do the same.....it becomes real. This is a travesty...since the closest thing going on in the world today that is "fascist" in nature is what this current Bush Administration is doing. All you need do is check out their economic actions, their protection of corporate America, their pandering to the rich and support for big oil, their disregard for the common folks, their use of military might....and on and on.

Is anyone taking on this point? Was this already discussed here at DU?...if so I missed it.

1. A fascist regime that outlawed the charging of interest would be quite odd
Indeed.

And yes, it has been discussed quite a bit here on DU. There's always room for more, though. :)

2. It fits in with the meme...
...Saddam is Hitler.

...Noriega is Hitler.

You get the idea.

Now Islam is Hitler.

This usually precedes an attack, probably on Iran.

Same old, same old...

5. started on RW radio
Mike Savage coined it, and started using it first in his "hate 'em then kill 'em all" diatribes. Then when dim-son used it, it was like a code word to the nutcake fundie base.

8. Yep. The extreme RW has been batting that term around for
years. Limbaugh, Hannity, others have used it, but when the Prez says it, it gets noticed.

6. Discussed.
Edited on Thu Aug-24-06 10:25 AM by igil
I've seen references to the term from the early '80s, wrt the Iranian Islamic Revolution and the Rushdie fatwa. It was coined to distinguish the rabid Islamists going around imposing shari'a on everybody from the everybody that shari'a was being imposed on, and to say that Islam wasn't actually like Khomeini was making it out to be.

It's lurked for the last 25 years or so, and only become more common in the last 4 or 5. Mostly in conservative circles.

Edit: Others claim it, and may have independently neologized it. Still, it traces back before Savage thought of being on the radio.

9. Thanks for the input....
This whole usage and idea of fascism linked to the world of Islam is pretty well debunked by Dr. Andrew Bosworth, among others.

On the website: www.virtualcitizens.com, Dr. Bosworth writes:

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Welcome to Neo-Fascism 101
Andrew Bosworth, Ph.D.
08/14/06

"Neo-conservatives decided that World War III is to be waged against “Islamic-Fascists” or “Islamo-Fascism.”

Who is reading from the new script? William Kristol, Bill O’Reilly, Christopher Hitchens, Michelle Mankin, Michael Savage, Ann Coulter, Nick Cohen, Newt Gingrich, Rush Limbaugh, Daniel Pipes, Glenn Beck, Oliver North – even George W. Bush, prompting legitimate complaints from Muslim-Americans.

Middle Eastern powers include pan-Arab socialist dictatorships (Syria), monarchies (Saudi Arabia), constitutional theocracies (Iran), and assorted fundamentalist movements. None are “fascist.” For three decades of political scientists, “fascism” is a phenomenon of industrialized societies and exhibits features alien to the Middle East."
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

It is a very good article. Maybe some of the right wingnuts should read it...and others before they just start spewing rhetoric. I mean they could have come up with something that made some sense..like "Islamo-Terror-suiciders"...that one the Shrub would even like....and at least it is descriptive.

11. Didn't you hear? The Islamos dissolved their parliament and appointed
representatives from all the major corporations. Their corporations now make their laws. Wait a minute did I say the Islamos did that?

14. I think that the term is somewhat accurate
Fascism implies that there is no freedom of ideas or choice. Certainly in Saudi Arabia or Iran this holds true. There is no choice but to follow the Government's imposed Islamic fundamentalist law.
