Bush Meets With Republican Good Ol' Boy, But Not Sheehan
When Cindy Sheehan held a lengthy vigil near George W. Bush's Crawford, Texas ranch last summer and endured oppressive heat, dehydration and right-wing hecklers, she was there to ask Bush one simple question: "For what noble cause did my son die?"

The president of Gold Star Families for Peace, Sheehan lost her son, Casey, on April 4, 2004 when he was killed in Iraq.

Bush aides made lame excuses every day last August including citing his schedule -- he clearly had a lot of brush to clear and many bike rides to take -- as a reason for denying Sheehan's request for a 15-minute meeting with the man she still blames for her son's death.

A grieving mother, who gave her only son fighting in a war started by this president and she wants a meeting with him? Tough luck and have a nice summer, said Team Bush.

But let a good ol' boy from Louisiana show up in front of the White House to express concern over the slow process of getting Hurricane Katrina relief, and Georgie's schedule opens up faster than George Allen can spit out a racial slur. Rockey Vaccarella, of St. Bernard Parish, towed a replica of a FEMA trailer from Louisiana to the White House to insist on a meeting with Bush.

Vaccarella said he wanted to thank Bush for what little help has come to Katrina victims, but also said that he was coming because he didn’t want the federal government and President Bush "to forget about us."

Lo and behold, Bush decided to take the meeting. Oh, you should also know that, while he didn't lose a child in Iraq or anything, Rockey is a Bush supporter who once ran as a Republican candidate for the St. Bernard Parish Council.

“We have hope that he will join me for dinner. And, why would he not? Why won't he talk to an American?" said Vaccarella on August 21 as he journeyed toward Washington. "He talks to people from China. He talks to people from Israel and many other countries. So why wouldn't he talk to me - an American?”

No reason at all, Rockey, as long as you're not the mother of a dead soldier and you are a fawning sycophant or can otherwise be used for political gain.

As it turns out, Vaccarella worked out well on both counts.

While something admirable could have come from Bush taking the time to meet with a person representing those his administration let down so badly almost a year ago, you could have thrown a rock in the Ninth Ward and hit someone better than Vaccarella to deliver that message.

"I just don't want the government and President Bush to forget about us," said Rockey, starting out sounding like he meant business.

But then he said what I'm sure had people lucky enough to actually be in FEMA trailers in New Orleans throwing shoes at their televisions: "If we had this President for another four years, I think we'd be great," said Vaccarella.

Good freakin' grief.

This was spoken by a man who drove all the way to Washington, DC with a trailer festooned with a banner reading "Forgotten on the Bayou." And the president seemed happy to be there too saying "Rock is a plain-spoken guy. He's the kind of fellow I feel comfortable talking to."

Yeah, I'm sure that was like a meeting of the Algonquin Round Table, all right.

Meanwhile, as Bush mouthed words indicating that the federal government is now ready to help Katrina victims, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi released "Broken Promises," a report that details the enormity of the Bush administration's abysmal response to Katrina.

"One year ago, Katrina and Rita taught the American people the terrible lesson that their government was not prepared to protect them," said Reid. "Unfortunately, one year after the hurricanes and five years after 9/11, Bush Republicans in Washington still have not taken that lesson to heart."

Included in the report were findings that $2 billion in FEMA funding for Katrina relief has been lost to waste, fraud and abuse and 80 percent of Gulf Coast businesses with approved SBA disaster loans are still waiting to get their money.

The report also found that only 56 of 128 public schools in New Orleans are open for the 2006-2007 school year, while also pointing out that the Republican Congress stalled housing money for Louisiana homeowners until June, 10 months after Katrina – and most of that money has still not been received by homeowners.

But there was Rocky Vaccarella telling the guy who presided over all of this that he wished he could stay in office and that his reign of error could be extended.

And what of Cindy Sheehan?

Well, she had to buy property near Bush's ranch to continue her quest to get a few similar minutes with him after the local county commissioners banned roadside camping and parking to shield Bush from the terror of a grief-stricken mother. And, when White House Spokesman Tony Snow was asked if Bush would meet with Sheehan this month in Texas, he indicated that they didn't have time for her and nicely added "I would advise her to bring water, Gatorade or both," for the long hours she would spend waiting in the summer heat.

Sheehan has already approached a roadblock by Bush's ranch once this month and, when stopped by Secret Service agents, said simply "My name is Cindy and Bush killed my son."

She should know that's not going to cut it.

To see this guy, you need to be a good ol' boy, a supporter, a Republican and one who is showing up primarily to get a goofy photo opportunity with a president -- even the worst ever -- and not really have anything difficult to say.

"You know, it's really amazing when a small man like me from St. Bernard Parish can meet the President of the United States," said Vaccarella, standing on the White House grounds with Bush Tuesday. "The president is a people person."

As long as you're the right kind of person, I'm sure he is.

3. George Bush and the Republican Party: The worst government our
money can support. For access, please donate the maximum amount of money, and you may get someone to listen to you, as long as it works out well for them.

Amurikans? They don't need no stinkin' Amurikans. They're in control now. Their second in command, Dick Cheney, said it best: "Fuck yourself." And that's what they've been doing to us all along.

It's a disgrace, a shame, and it must be stopped.

4. One question for Vaccarella...
...Do you find it hard to breathe with your nose stuck so far up the President's asshole??

BTW, Vaccarella is a local GOP pol from St. Bernard Parish.

6. As wiser minds than mine own have pointed out...
This is just damage control and counter spin for having to do with Spike Lee's new movie about Katrina.

Even a cursory look at this schlep reveals a host of identically worded websites. A really lazy PR job with a lazier media unable to dig beneath even the most shallow layer of what is obviously propeganda.

I think Spike Lee's film will probably be the better account of the whole mess.

12. Lord God, I saw it on Mon-Tues nights.
Spike Lee brought the whole tragedy HOME!! Now I'm not stupid, I knew how horrible things are in New Orleans and the Gulf area. But the full emotional weight of the tragedy totally fell upon me in a new way when I saw the film. I swear, I could not have gone through what those people experienced and come out alive and/or in my right mind. If I was Bush, Mike Brown, or Chertoff my conscience would NEVER FORGIVE ME!!
Lee's film was a beautifully directed and sharp indictiment of the imcompetence of the Bush administration; if impeachment proceedings are ever begun on the administration next year (that's if Americans wake up and get some strong Democrats in control of Congress minus the possibility of Diebold machines stealing another election for the Republicans), I wonder if one of the articles could remove the president or a senior administation official for criminal negligence of Katrina victims.

I'm pissed. :grr:

7. Lapdog Media Helps Bush Propoganda Blitz
Rockey Vaccarella, who lost his home in Katrina, decides one year later to drive a trailer to the White House to thank President Bush for all he's done for the Katrina victims.

I didn't know it was that easy to get a meeting with the president. I didn't know regular people usually traveled with a media group or their own film crew. Oh, and he's also going to run again for parish council, an office he already tried for and lost.

Anywhere else, such a stunt probably wouldn't have been attempted because it is too juvenile. Or, if it were, it would be quickly dismissed as a propoganda ploy. But not in this country. CNN devoted a 22-minute segment to this story today! Replete with soft-ball questions to Rockey and more than ample time for all his accolades about how fantastic Bush has been despite that he is so busy and how wonderful the FEMA trailers are. Not even one comment that Rockey's view might be a minority view. CNN even went so far as to compare Rockey's visit to that of Iraq war-protestor Cindy Sheehan, suggesting that Bush was under "political pressure" to meet with Rockey! Great journalism, CNN!

Certainly they (the liberal media) have some obscure, trickery ensconced in what outwardly appears as playing lapdogs to this regime! You just wait! One of these days, that sneaky ol' Lib media gang is gonna spring their trap! Probably the day after a Demo takeover in DC!

9. I admire Sheehan and despise DUHbya, BUT
it's hard to blame Bush for refusing to meet with her a second time.

He hasn't attended a single funeral for the cannon fodder he sends over there...to me, that's a far more outrageous refusal to face the victim(s) of his monumental mistake, and their families.

News and commentary, left to right

11. Rocky
If this man lost everything he had in Katrina as he proposes...how did he get money to buy or even rent a trailer - a duplicate of those in NO. Where did the money come from for that long long trip. We all know what gas cost today. Did he have a "donation" from some of the republicans.......AND HE FORGOT TO MENTION HE WAS A BUSINESS OWNER BEFORE THE HURRICAN.

14. He does signify Bush's vision of New Orleans.
White, Republican, middle-class, largely Christian, gutted of soul and rational thought. That was the main tie-in throughout Spike Lee's heart gripping documentary was how much this administration wanted to turn New Orleans into a carbon copy of the rest of the South. This little kiss ass Corporal Dumbfuck allowed into the White House is just its human incarnation.

17. very strange . . .
i thought he was going to make the trip to Washington to campaign for the needs of the people of N.O. who are still in FEMA trailors. Then I hear one news clip on the radio of him praising Bush! Did I miss something? Did the bright lights and big city blind this guy to his original mission in going to Washington?

19. Not a "replica" FEMA trailer
An "honorary" FEMA trailer. See, guys like Mr. Vaccarella (derived from the Italian word for "tool") don't travel around in single-wides. No, his trailer was appointed a lot better than some poor New Orleans refugee from the Ninth Ward. And it's the merest coincidence that Mr. Vaccarella is a former GOP candidate, a fact that totally escaped our snoozing bulldogs of the Fourth Estate until Mr. Vaccarella had successfully skedaddled out of town with his documentary film crew in tow.

20. Consistency Must Be Maintained With Regard To News
I urge caution to people eager to see things get better.
Many people throughout history have suffered, and many
are now, in part because they do not understand the way things
work.
My learning process has led me to the conclusion that
rushing into taking advantage of a situation is not likely to
work now. It requires patience and steadiness so that the
positive elements will not be ruined.
There are many levels of understanding, from the simple
to the metaphorical, and one must find his ability level
before deciding how to participate.
Many people are not necessarily up front about their TRUE
intentions, and so the process of positive change must be
considered carefully.
I don't urge doing nothing, just learning as much about
where you fit in and the dangers of engaging in various
activities that others can observe, and whether those who
appear to be working for something really are. Patience is
very important, because there are forces of the mind at work
that wish to have things work out quickly, which can cause
things to go wrong.
We shouldn't get too excited everytime somebody says
something about a positive event. Bush is probably going to
serve out his term, and will continue to prosecute the war.
Expect that FIRST rather than get excited when news people
suggest otherwise. If the war does end, and Katrina victims
improve, by the efforts we carefully undertake, then we'll
have reason for contentment, but not before. I'm not trying
to be Pollyanna, just realistic, so we don't lose our
consistency of effort.
