4. I'll start...Hubert Humphrey Democrat...
The best combination of idealism and pragmatism. Turned him into one of the most effective United States Senators in American History. His crowning achievments of course the Nuclear Test Ban treaty and the landmark Civil Rights legislation in 1964...also the originator of the idea that became the Peace Corps, and one of the first to suggest a medical insurance plan for the elderly that became Medicare!

One poll I saw had him behind only Clay, Webster, Calhoun, and Lyndon Johnson (ironically) in the catrgory of greatest Senators of all time!

Edited on Thu Aug-24-06 10:21 AM by Armstead
I agree with you about Humphrey.

But he would be branded by the Establishment Democrats and the Media of today as a fringe leftist radical. Al From and the DLC would cite him as the kind of naive leftist that holds back the Democratic Party.

Universal health care for the elderly? How far do you think that would get in today's climate? It's be called socialist and unrealistic by the same Democratic Conventional Thinking who have failed tyo push hard for Universal health care today.

Nuclear Test Ban Treaty? My God, that's almost as bad as saying we had no business going into Iraq.

Said that considering yourself a Hubert Humphrey Democrat today was the same as being a Nelson Rockefeller Republican...

Implying Humphrey would be considered a conservative Democrat today...

38. republicans and Democrats were closer then -- but in a liberal sense
Edited on Thu Aug-24-06 10:43 AM by Armstead
If Rockefeller were around today, he'd probably be consider a Chaffee Republican. Too liberal for the GOP.

IMO, the "center" back then was much further to the left that it is today. Which actually meant it was more in balance. So someone like Humphrey could have been considered "mainstream" Democrat, while espousing positions that are very similar to what "fringe leftists" like Wellstone have advocated in more recent years....And the GOP allowed more moderate conservative positions that were less reactionary.

Think of the reaction today if a program like Medicare were introduced out of the blue. It would never get out of committee.

The real issue -- IMO -- is to restore a center that emulates the positions of someone like Humphrey, rather than allowing right-wing Corporate Conserrvativism to define both parties.

Would be branded as farther left than Ted Kennedy. As would JFK, Lyndon Johnson, and Dweight Eisenhower. Just look at what percentage of their income the rich paid in taxes under their administrations and compare that to today.

John Kerry. Bill Bradley. John Edwards. Al Gore.

Barbara Jordan. Robert F. Kennedy Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.

Dennis Kucinich. Birch Bayh. Paul Wellstone. Tom Harkin.

Julian Bond. George McGovern. Barack Obama. Mo Udall.

Etc.

Otherwise, yellow dog, pissed off, wondering where Brutus and Cassius are when you really need them, all of those labels and more apply to me.

Not a Democrat, but I'm sure he would have been if he'd been American.

In terms of modern day American politics, the difference in views between the conservative wing of the Democratic party (in which I'm including Nelson, and tentatively Lieberman, but excluding Miller - the litmus test being "will caucus with") and the most liberal Republicans is sufficiently greater than that between the most and least liberal Democrats capable of winning office that I think that winning at any cost is the thing.

He has revived the interest in national politics that I had in my youth, supporting John Kennedy. That interest died with Kennedy. Wes Clark was also inspired by JFK and seems to carry the vision that JFK had for this country. The fact he is not just another windsock, pandering politician enhances his standing with me.

71. Media spin with regards to his funeral
The speeches that his sons made and the booing of Trent Lott, and not inviting Dick Cheney were all spun by the media as insensitive. Of course the story that the media didn't run is the vicious character assassination campaign that these people were running against Senator Wellstone to try and ruin his political career.

One of my biggest regrets in my life is that I voted for Dole when I was 18 instead of Clinton. It was Bush's campaign in 2000 that convinced me that I better belonged with the Democratic Party and I made Gore the first democratic person I ever cast my vote for. I wish I had realized back then how good of a president Clinton really was. Now its much easier for me to see since I can compare the successes of the Clinton presidency with Bush's failed policies.

61. Jimmy Carter Democrat..
people blamed Carter for inflation, the Iran hostage crises, and for extreme gas shortages.

But he deserve much of the credit for bringing back all the hostages alive. He deserved credit for overseeing a smaller and more fiscally conservative government than any Republican President since. He deserves credit for being the most moral and honest President elected to that office in 50 years!

If he had been re-elected I believe the national debt would now be half it's current size, that every citizen would have healthcare, and the exploding price of gasoline would have only an unnoticed effect on our economy. Most importantly..we would have never provided the weapons and funds used in organizing the terrorists, to fight the Soviets and who are now fighting us! IMO..9/11 would have never happened, and bin Laden would be nothing more in our history than a failed David Koresh.

78. Here's a few Democrats I admire and why I admire them
There's no single political leader that I'd pledge allegiance--nobody's perfect--to but I have to admire the following:

Al Gore:
Right on Global Warming before it was fashionable. Right on the Iraq war before it was fashionable and an outspoken supporter of the rights of all Americans. Has the personal conviction and will to rise from the ashes of what has to be the most bitter disappointment anyone could face and find a new and creative way to work for the things he believes in.

Howard Dean:
Right on the Iraq war before it was fashionable, budget balancing, straight talking economic populist with a passion for health care. Was able to put aside his bitterness at the fall of his presidential campeign and work hard for the man who beat him and the party that some say stabbed him in the back.

Russ Feingold:
Right on the Patriot Act from the very beginning, Right on wiretapping, right on campeign finance reform and not afraid to stand alone while the rest of the party puts their fingers to the wind.

Bill Clinton:
I don't admire his politics as much as I admire his ability to continue to work single mindedly for the good of the country while facing vicious attacks about his personal life and integrity.

John Conyers:
Dogged integrity and a passion for the truth. What's not to love.

Rush Holt:
Right on electronic voting machines before it was fashionable--and besides who else has a bumber sticker that says "My Congressman IS a rocket scientist" Proud to be able to vote for him in New Jersey.

Brian Schweitzer:
Outspoken feisty populist who shows that a liberal message properly presented CAN play in rural states. A REAL cowboy. Besides, I absolutely love his dog.

There are more but unfortunately I have to go to work to pay my exorbitant broadband charges.

Bill Clinton was one of the best presidents of the 20th century, and Hillary Clinton will be a terrific president.
