WTF? From Moveon.org....
See highlight-so it's all or nothing? Hmmmm.....

Dear MoveOn member,

Pretty amazing: In under 24 hours, folks have pitched in $343,940 of the $416,000 needed to turbocharge our Call for Change get-out-the-vote program.

The techniques we're hoping to use to boost our impact—"microtargeting" and "banking" votes—aren't something we can do half way. So we're only going to accept these donations if people pledge the remaining $72,060.
Think of it this way—every dollar contributed today to put us over the top will unleash almost $5 in money that's already been pledged.

We don't have the high-dollar corporate donors Republicans rely on to afford these voter turnout techniques. But we are 3 million people strong, and we're ready for a change. Together, we can beat them at their own game. Can you donate $25?

We've mounted a major campaign to turn out enough progressive voters to win control of Congress—Call for Change. Together, we'll call millions of progressive voters in the most competitive congressional districts and make sure they get to the polls. Now we want to supe it up with the same advanced techniques Republicans have been using to win elections.

If we meet our goal today, we'll be able to use "microtargeting" to find thousands of additional progressives who may not otherwise vote. And we can run a sophisticated program to "bank" their votes using absentee ballots, giving us a key edge on Election Day (see the PS below for more).

Today, 5,820 MoveOn members are counting on you to match their pledge. Here's what one of them asked us to pass along:

By getting progressive Democrats in office who are dedicated to solving the myriad problems facing the country we can again have a country to be proud of. Please give! As little as $5 or $10 from everyone will be a big help.
—Genie, Clackamas, Oregon

Boosting the impact of our program will take $416,000. We're close! Can you help put us over the top, and unleash $343,940 in other members' contributions?

Thank you for being a part of this amazing community.

P.S. Here are some details about the techniques we're hoping to add to Call for Change.

Microtargeting: Republicans use "microtargeting" to find and communicate with all their supporters.

Without microtargeting, most campaigns simply target voters in supportive neighborhoods, and those who live elsewhere get skipped.
Microtargeting uses sophisticated statistics to find supporters wherever they live.
Microtargeting can more than double the number of voters you talk to!
Absentee and early voting: Republicans have also pioneered the use of early voting and absentee ballots to "bank" votes before Election Day.

In some states, voting starts in October. Republicans have figured out how to get a big chunk of their supporters to vote early.
On Election Day, they can focus all their energy on the small group of people who haven't voted yet.
In some cases, they've got the election sewn up weeks early.

9. If Move-On doesn't raise X dollars by certain time God will call them...
Well Micro-targeting is I'm not mistaken is a fancy way of saying telemarketing campaign.I have to admit I donate to various groups and some seem to spend more getting additional donations than I originally gave.(Sierra Club has killed at least 3 trees trying to get another $25 bucks from me)

The tactics are well worn and not underhanded it is just a little awkward coming from a progressive group.

3. They'll return the money donated
if they don't make their quota? Just sounds a bit ungrateful to me.

5. No they are saying that
the need exactly 416,000 to do this, not 374K, not 400K. If they can't get the 416K they aren't going to do it and they will return the money of those who did donate. I missing how this is somehow ungrateful.

7. Sorry, for people freely contributing to a campaign or cause, this

sounds vaguely threatening to me. How much do they need exactly and how do they know the exact amount? Why wouldn't a bit less work when it's money that will be used to put forth ideas?
That's my initial gut reaction and I'm sticking to it! :)

Edit to add: MoveOn will reach their goal, I know commercials, etc., are expensive. Their tactics are suspect to me. That is all.

4. They micro targetted my broke ass for $50!
They had to settle for $10. My Micro bank account couldn't give up much more than that.

10. You can't buy the 65 thou. car with 50 thou. Period
Don't take it personal. They do great work but they need to do it this way & they need that much.
They are begging, that is enough. This is one thing Dems need to do better. Republicans give &
have this in the bag. We need to work seriously on these goals.
