Ohio Election Problems
Alert... help Ohio....

Please don't disregard this post... it could be a very accurate prediction of the GOP's attempt to steal '06

we all know the outcome of the '04 elections... I am concerned about the '06 elections and you should be too because it will effect the '08 elections.

this is how they will steal it this year. The new Voter ID law.
From the SOS website:

Will I need an ID to Vote? (note: this is new - the first time it was used was in the special election this year - a handful of school levies and local issues...)

Yes. Every voter will be required to provide proof of identity before voting. The form of identification that you may use includes your current and valid photo identification card, military identification, copy of utility bill, bank statement, paycheck, government check, or government document showing your name and current address. (Note: You cannot use as proof of identification a notice that the board of elections mailed to you.) If you do not have, or fail or refuse to provide, the required proof of identity, you may cast a provisional ballot.

Republicans cannot win in a free, fair, open and honest election. So... what might be the biggest demographic that have drivers' licenses with old addresses or no drivers' license? Maybe lower income people that rent or seniors that have quit driving, moved in with a relative or nursing home? (those more likely to vote Dem)

So... okay - they can vote by provisional - right?
Also from SOS website:

Providing Proof of Identity Within 10 Days After the Election
Before a provisional ballot can be included in the official count of an election, the board of elections must confirm the voter’s eligibility to cast the ballot, as well as the validity of the ballot that was cast. In some cases, a provisional voter can establish his or her eligibility to vote by appearing in person at the board of elections office within 10 days immediately after Election Day and completing the appropriate steps:....

In my mind this is complete and total BS and it may be worse than the '04 paper weight, long lines, lock downs, etc. This is what we all might be bitching about on November 8. We need to get pissed off and active on this issue RIGHT NOW!

People DON'T KNOW about this requirement!!! We need massive voter education!!!! The DNC, DCCC, DSCC, ODP, etc all need to be on top of this! But - what you can do is inform every voter in Ohio that you know - send e-mails - tell them they need ID - and if it doesn't have the current address, they need to bring a utility bill. Write letters to the editor to inform voters of this requirement. (And, if you wish, express your disgust at the GOP's attempt at further voter disenfranchisement).

2. Hasn't this been SOP for years?

5. There were already problems
here - people didn't know that they had to provide ID in the Special election, so some either didn't bring it or their ID may have had an old address (in Ohio you have to update your DL every 4 years, many times people ONLY update their Dl when it is about to expire... not b/c they have moved from one Ohio address to another) - so they had to vote provisional and for it to count, they had to go to the BOE to provide proof.

6. Be prepared.
This is why I encourage every voter to check on their registration, precinct and polling station ahead of time. I am an Election commissioner and we are just too busy on "the day". Do yourself a favor and check things out before hand. If your vote matters to you, it is not that much to ask.

8. It is certainly not too much to ask of me
however, as far as the large amount of voters that only vote and are not activists - it might be too much to ask of them. Some people I registered to vote - were hesitant b/c they were afraid of having to respond for jury duty. It is the real and accurate picture of where I live that the harder you make voting, the less likely lower income folks are to vote.

Also - there is the HUGE issue of people not knowing that this is the new law!!! PLEASE - if you know anyone in Ohio, send an e-mail and let them know of this new requirement!!!

7. Did you read my entire post?
Do you realize that people don't know about the voter ID requirements? Please - forward the information to any friends that you have in Ohio because even if it seem like SOP to you - it does not to voters in Ohio!

btw - they don't know b/c the GOP controlled legislature passed the bill with the GOP SOS (Blackwell) left to enforce it - he has been absent to disseminate directives to local boards of elections. The poll worker training on this new requirement was completely absent! Poll workers thought anyone that did not have a Driver's License that matched voter registration had to vote provisional (which was not counted unless they went to the BOE w/in 10 days to prove their eligibility).

4. NO!!! it has never been required in Ohio
all that was require was one's signature. This is the first election (except for the special election this year that only had a handful of school levies and local issues) that this has been required. And, I don't know what State you live in, but you can bet in Ohio - this *new* requirement has been written and will be enforced not out of integrity but only for partisan purposes.

9. Gonna be pretty funny ... the lady who walks by my house every day
(weather permitting) on her daily constitutional is also the woman who lights up when I approach the table to vote. Knows me by name and sight.

She also pretty much watched my wife grow up (and, with a very visible physical handicap, my wife is well known around the town she spent all but maybe 2 years of her life in).

So, it would be rather funny if, all of a sudden, this woman who stops by and chats for a few moments with me if I happen to be out at the same time as she is walking - has to ask me for ID ...

10. Ken Blackwell's world
The only way the GOP can win in this state is if they steal votes.

11. K & R! Georgia voter here
but absentee, so the Dieboldization of Georgia (not to mention the new ID requirements) don't affect me.

Cure democracy in Ohio, and that's a big piece of the cancer cut out. Eventually, the cure may even reach Georgia.
