Bush revives, revamps message
By TOM RAUM, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - In the thick of an election campaign, President Bush has revived and retooled his argument that the U.S. must fight terrorists overseas or face them here. Despite the unpopularity of the Iraq war, some GOP candidates are borrowing Bush's line.

"We leave before the mission is done, the terrorists will follow us here," Bush warned at a news conference this week.

Rep. Curt Weldon, R-Pa., locked in a tight Philadelphia-area re-election race, went a step further. "We either fight them there, or we fight them in the supermarkets and streets here," he said Wednesday in an interview with CNN.

Bush is not on the ballot this midterm election year. But control of the GOP-led Congress is. So the elections could determine the fate of what's left of Bush's second-term agenda.

The fight-them-there theme has been part of Bush's national security stump speech since 2003. But the "follow us here" part is a relatively new twist.

1. In the supermarkets?
Would this be in the produce section? The meat section? Somewhere near the ice cream?

6. Another deeply flawed GOP policy
A) Using a foreign nation as "fly paper" was illegal, immoral and appeared nowhere in the rationale for this war.

B) They will follow us home??? Like a puppy dog? Just exactly how many young men who might be pissed off about ________(fill in the blank) should we kill to have success for the dismal failure? How many people will become sympathetic to a cause that should have been beaten by real trust in democracy and the benefits of "our way of life." After we've killed all of the terrists, we gonna have to kill the wannabees. There will be rivers of blood from staying this stupid course. And the US will be busted flat broke long before Mission Accompliced is finished.

8. If Weldon is in trouble
then the GOP has some very serious problems if things don't improve by November; I for one don't see how it could improve by this fall. This guys been in Congress since I was in high school (when I was in High School the Hooters were just getting started). He's never been in an election where he hasn't gotten at least 60-65% of the vote!

9. I think I've heard entirely enough about Bush and his little 'messages'
Can we get something OTHER than marketing campaigns out of this administration? Something other than marketing campaigns, debts and pain, that is.

When was the last time you saw a media story about what Bush is ACTUALLY doing, versus what his 'message of the day' happens to be?

12. The guest on the Daily Show said the whole war is a PR campaign
And that the Bush administration is basically losing a marketing campaign to a bunch of guys who live in caves. Very reassuring, let me tell you.

10. "If we take down this picket fence, all that water will come rushing in!"
What in the world leads anyone to believe that all the potential terrorists are tied down in Iraq?!

There were only 19 hijackers. Does anyone really think that our activities overseas are preventing a couple handfuls of individuals from causing trouble anywhere else in the world?

It's one of the dumbest arguments I've ever heard and everyone seems to buy it!

Can't do much else with SOS Stay The Course.

Stephanie Miller (I think) did a funny riff on this "they'll follow us home" crap -something about how the terriers don't have Map Quest so they need to be shown the way to the US.
