Allen says racial slur "nothing to apologize for," gets Bush's endorsement

A Presidential Endorsement

by Michael Link
Wed Aug 23rd, 2006 at 10:47:24 AM EST

After twelve days, Senator George Allen has not yet personally apologized to the young Virginian he called "macaca." Perhaps it's because his campaign manager, Dick Wadhams, said from the beginning that the Senator's use of the M-word is perfectly okay and that Allen has "nothing to apologize for." Or perhaps it's because Allen believes, as Wadhams said recently in a memo, that it "did not warrant coverage in the first place."

These are not the words of a man sorry for his actions, yet President Bush has decided to reward the Senator for his disgusting remarks by headlining an Allen campaign fundraiser later today.

This is a disgrace at the highest levels of our government. When a sitting Senator uses language intended to demean a 20 year-old American citizen, we expect our President to put the partisanship aside and condemn the abusive rhetoric. Instead, the President has decided to stand behind Allen's remarks, despite Allen’s lack of remorse.

It's official; the M-word has now received a Presidential endorsement. As George Allen might say, "Welcome to America."

1. These people are showing they're just like their voters
The southern poverty law center and others have done tireless work to stop these scumbags and then they continue to show that they unfortunately have more than a little endurance as the hate groups they are.

5. Wolf just reported Allen finally called the young man today to apologize!
What took you so long, Allen! Could it be your sinking poll numbers finally convinced you that you had no other choice?

6.  "welcome to America"
a Senator, assuming someone is an immigrant becasue of the color of his skin - this tells me Sen Allen doesn't get out much, that he sees way, way too many faces just like his - white.

7. Allen thinks racism is nothing to apologize for. And Bush agrees.
Allen obviously has no intent to alter his racist self -- nor to even feign doing so. The latter could turn out being political incompetence. And Dubya always awards incompetence -- and always abets racism.

8. Allen appears to be a hardcore, old-school racist...
He probably resents the fact that he lives in a day and age when its not publicly cool to spew his bigotry.

10. Apology - take two
"I take full responsibility. I'm not offering any excuses because I said it and no one else said it," a somber-sounding Allen told Hannity's audience of more than 12 million listeners. "It's a mistake. I apologize and from my heart, I'm very, very sorry for it."

Snip...

"It's great to have the president in Virginia, raising substantial amounts of money so we can fight off the scurrilous attacks by our opponent and his leftist allies," campaign manager Dick Wadhams said in an interview.

Last weekend, Wadhams sent a memo to GOP supporters in which he blamed the media for creating a "feeding frenzy" over the incident and called it a "desperate attempt to revive a campaign that was fast-sinking -- the Webb campaign."

Asked if that message is consistent with Allen's apologies, Wadhams said "I think the memo speaks for itself."

Charlie Cook, the editor of the Cook Political Report, said the Allen campaign is pursuing a two-pronged strategy aimed at convincing some voters that Allen is sorry, while motivating his base with attacks against liberals and the media.

11. Allen is only sorry he got caught.
Look at the statement closely. Nowhere does he say, "My language was offensive and I was wrong." He only says it was "a mistake" - translation "It was a mistake that I said it when the camera was on." He's "very very sorry" to have been called on it.

Must have felt like deju vu having to apologize for a racial slur. He had to apologize over the PA for scrawling racist graffiti on the walls of his high school 36 years ago. I was in his class and remember it well.

13. I am pleased every time you post that picture
It speaks VOLUMES. How anyone like him has succeeded in politics in this century is amazing to me. I guess I am naive to the senseless hatred.

14. He has succeeded in politics up until now
because he had a famous father and because no one ever made an issue of his past. I tried in 2000. Contacted Chuck Robb's campaign and told them what I knew. Also contacted some reports in Virginia, but they were skeptical. I'm glad this stuff is now coming out. It's about time.
