Reuters: Bush raises cash for senator in "macaca" flap
Bush raises cash for senator in "macaca" flap
Wed Aug 23, 2006 12:03pm ET

By Patricia Wilson

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush has no reservations about raising
money for a Republican senator under sharp criticism for calling a rival-
campaign worker of Indian descent "macaca," the White House said on
Wednesday.

"With Sen. (George) Allen having made an apology ... it is in all of our best
interests and as we work in politics and we work to improve the tone and the
discourse, that when apologies are offered, they are accepted," spokeswoman
Dana Perino said.

Democrats called on Bush to condemn Allen, who is seeking a second term in the
U.S. Senate in November and considering a presidential run in 2008, for remarks
in which he also welcomed the campaign volunteer "to the real world of Virginia."

-snip-

"By staying silent, the president -- who fancies himself as a man of integrity --
is giving tacit approval to comments that have no place in the public discourse,"
said Phil Singer, communications director for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign
Committee. "Even worse, the president's decision to host a fund-raiser for Allen
sends a signal that the senator's actions were acceptable."

What will actually turn off Pukes is that Allen was idiotic enough to say it into a camera and therefore got caught.

16. Allen also sprayed racist graffiti on the walls of
his high school when he was a teenager in Southern California. I was in his graduating class and remember it well. He was forced to "apologize" over the school PA that time, too. Then, as now, he's only sorry he got caught.

Allen (R-Racist pig) never directly apologized to SR Sidarth, who, as a matter of fact,
once again asked that the senator phone him and apologize. So Dana, just exactly who did Allen offer his apology to?

14. What a cleaned up version this is.
It left out that George Allen probably learned the word as a child from his Tunisian Mother.

It left out that this was reinforcing previous incidents of racism on the part of the Senator.

It also neglected to mention that Senator Allen told the young man, "Welcome to America" before he said welcome to the real Virginia. The "real Virginia" was a group of caucasian supporters in south-western Virginia. The Webb videographer was born in Fairfax, Virginia. Senator Allen was born in California, not far from Hollywood.

18. What a crock of smarmy crap...
"it is in all of our best interests and as we work in politics and we work to improve the tone and the discourse, that when apologies are offered, they are accepted,"

Really?

I thought the whole point of an apology was to express remorse. I'd also thought it was up to the recipient as to whether that apology was accepted. I translate the whole statement as "Yes, he said something shitty and stupid that he's actually not too goddamn sorry for, but he made an apology, so just drop it, OK?"

And I'm sure the next time he says something shitty and stupid, he'll be "sorry" then too. And we should just drop it. I've got a better idea, how about we hold these people's feet to the fire until they actually understand WHY what they say is wrong and make an actual effort NOT to let it happen again?

27. That Is Way Too Practical
All politicians apologies ring hollow, especially Republican politicans. I doubt a personal apology would have been made in this case without money pressure coming from the Whitehouse. Of course Allen doesn't mean it. When you mean it it doesn't take over a week to make that phone call. You recognize your mistake right away and try to right it and put it behind you.

20. Just remember the quote.
""With ... having made an apology ... it is in all of our best interests and as we work in politics and we work to improve the tone and the discourse, that when apologies are offered, they are accepted."

It's a load of shit, but let's use it - the next time a Democrat pisses off a Republican and then apologizes, I fully expect the Fuckwad-in-Chief and his minions of sub-holes to drop the matter entirely, no matter what the Democrat does. If Harry Reid takes a shit on Allen's desk and apologizes, that should be that, right?

The arrogance and gall of this "administration" are even more shocking than their stupidity and greed. Who'd have thought this possible?

23. Welcome to DU.....
Allen isn't sorry for the racism. That's just who he is. He's only sorry he got caught. And by supporting him, Bush is sending a signal that racist comments are not only ok, they are to be rewarded.

When Clinton was guilty of a private transgression, no amount of apologies were good enough. He had to be punished with impeachment. Allen publically delivers a racial slur, offers a halfhearted non-apology, and gets a fundraiser. Just another example of republican hypocrisy.

41. Thank you for the welcome.
This is just the sort of place I needed. Until Bush, I was content to be blissfully ignorant about government, I was largely indifferent towards government and figured that it really didn't matter all that much which side was in charge. Ol' W showed me how wrong I was, and his Republican buddies managed to piss me off so much by their smarmy manner as they were screwing us that I started doing what I thought I never would - reading up on politics. I'm learning more from just reading posts here than I have in about three years of reading the paper and watching the news. Happy to be here.

Z.

24. Allen Steadfastly Refused To Personally Apologise
Until the Whitehouse applied the money pressure.

But that is not enough. How sincere can an apology be when it takes over a week for it to be made. Then factor in the statement by Allen's campaign manager just yesterday that tried to blame everybody else for this flap rather than the person who's lips spoke those words. This is too grudging by far to put this to bed.

it was a private fundraiser. As was VA-02's Thelma Drake's fundraisers with Bush and Cheney earlier this summer. Laura's coming to town Sept 7, and that's private too.

33. Those Republicans, can't take their own medicine. Not surprising......
(snip)

Wadhams acknowledged it had been a difficult week for Allen and his wife.

"Never in modern times has a statewide officeholder and candidate been so vilified in a desperate attempt to revive a campaign that was fast-sinking - the Webb campaign," Wadhams wrote. "

(paste)

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

That Wadhams, what a comedian!

Of course "a statewide officeholder and candidate been so vilified" before. Just ask any Democrat who has made a mis-step in their political career, and the number of Republicans who dogpiled on him. And those Repubs were "in a desperate attempt to revive a campaign that was fast-sinking" at the time, too.

Hypocrasy 2006. Same old story, brand new victim.

Sheesh! Suck it up, jerk......

34. See the video, feel the rage
When I heard macaca-gate discussed, at first, I thought nothing of it. I live in Virginia. Fox News which I monitor for my blog was laughing it off as a joke. Fred Barnes claimed he didn't know anyone that knew what macaca meant. To be frank, I didn't either.

Then I got the first whiff of stink. The local conservative newspaper, The Richmond Times-Dispatch, mentioned that macaca was a genus of monkey. Red flags went up.

But it took a Wikipedia search to realize it's a well-known racial slur.

Watch the video of smug 'Smiling' George Allen making a complete ass of himself.

it's fair game for the media to ask Bush to comment on the Macaca incident, Allen's bizarre fascination with the Confederacy (for a California kid), and post 911 racism.
