Pelosi on Letterman
Fielding softballs from Dave. Its pretty clear to me where Dave stands on issues. He's leading her right along.

She seems pretty nervous for a person who may soon be the next Speaker and 3rd in line to the Presidency.

I really, really *want* to like her and cheer for her .... but she's making it hard.

1. I've been saying on here for a loOOoong time...
I really like her personally, but she is a piss-poor speaker.

She stumbles on her words and she blinks continuously while talking. I'm praying like hell that Congressman Murtha is our speaker SOON!

5. Murtha will be in the running for leader, not speaker
They are different positions. Nancy has caucus support and no challenge is planned.

33. Jack Murtha is a great man but he's far too conservative on social issues
Edited on Wed Aug-23-06 05:36 PM by Hippo_Tron
I have tremendous respect for the man, who had the guts to stand up and tell the truth before it was popular to do so. I think that it's no coincidence that since he spoke out, other high profile Democrats have been calling for us to get out of Iraq.

The problem is that he's a member of the Blue Dog coalition and on domestic issues, especially social issues, he's fairly conservative. The Speaker will be the leader of our party until we get someone in the White House and the leader of our party needs to be liberal on social issues or our base will abandon us.

Also, if Pelosi is denied the Speakership, I would be very concerned about the wrath of female voters. She is in line to become the highest ranking woman official in the history of the United States and if she is bucked for that opportunity, I think that the women in our party will have something to say about that.

Hardly a reliable sample or respresentative of the country, but they crowd cheered at the right times and was obviously anti-Bush if not pro Democrat. I'll take that.

9. I give her a LOT of points for her mention of the now-mostly-forgotten
second great line of Kennedy's 1960 Innaugaural speech, the line following the famous 'ask not what your country can do for you .... '

My fellow citizens of the world: ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man.

i still don't understand, though, why Democrats always seem so quiet and nervous. they should be standing tall and yelling that the repugs are destroying America and need to be thrown out for the good of the country.

If you didn't see it.... and you think Democrats are QUIET.... you'd better find that clip of him on Hardball today.

26. Maybe the poster was watching Begala with Wolfie
Begala hit a new low. He was shaking his head in agreement as JC Watts bashed Dems. And...and...Begala said, "Well national security isn't my party's forte." Huh? Tell it to Jack Reed.

Anyway, I want to cheer Pelosi on. She's better than (write republican name)__________________. Ya know.

Could Dems please give Begala a tutorial with Paul Hackett on fighting back. Or how about sending him a list of "Fighting Dems." Anything.

34. Hackett and Pelosi both did great. The forums were different
and called for different approaches. Pelosi hit all the points well, she said it calmly but with strength. Hackett was in a situation that demanded he took no prisoners. In both cases I can say they did us proud.

Remember Republicans know power and how to get it, but they do not know how to govern. Because they can't govern they cannot hold onto power in a democratic system. To hold that power they have to destroy the democratic system.

One ugly, UGLY, joke. And I mean her whiny centrist/I-wanna-be-republican politics. Not her too-many-plastic-surgeries face... although...

20. I'm always amused by weak debaters....always resorting to personal
attacks because their little pea brains can't think of any other way to formulate a thought.

"UGLY", "...plastic-surgeries...", blah, blah blah.

Sorry if I offended you with the pea brain comment.

If it did offend you, I promise I'll try to come up with a different vegetable to describe your, ummm, "intelligence."

21. Even if you think she's not a good communicator, why can't you cheer
for her?

I mean, it's one thing to not feel she's a great communicator, or that she seems too timid, or not the best candidate for Speaker or whatever.....

But I think we should all cheer for our people.

I don't believe she's necessarily the best candidate, but I sure cheer for her.

And I thought she did just fine on Letterman.

23. Hey, remember when Clinton got booed at the Dem Nat. Convention
sometime back in the '80s? He gave a long, boring speech and his fellow Dems kept booing to get him to quit and he finally did.

Hard to believe, isn't it, cuz now I'd listen to him recite the alphabet. Somewhere along the way he got his groove. I hope Nancy gets her groove too.

32. To be clear .....
I thought she did okay, but not great. If I were to read a transcript, her words were, indeed, worth cheering for. It was her demeanor and delivery. To my eyes, she appeared uncomfortable and her voice seems to quaver.

I am very pro Pelosi and think a great deal of her. I also have the DU-inflicted scars from defending her from time to time, including her last(?) stint on Fat Timmy's Republican Hour.

I am PERFECTLY happy to see her continue as Leader and, when we win, as Speaker.

That said, the performance I saw on Letterman last night was less than I'd hoped for.
