http://www.john06.com/issues/iraqA Better Plan for IraqAmericans are growing increasingly concerned about the crisis in Iraq and it is clear that the President of the United States does not have a rational plan for our troops.
The endgame losers of the president's failed pre-emptive strike policy are both our troops currently deployed in Iraq and the Iraqi people. It is imperative that we develop a plan to succeed in Iraq and ease growing tensions in the Middle East.
The Bush administration fails to accept reality: the Iraqi people want the United States to withdraw troops.
The only thing that the Iraqi Parliament has agreed upon to this day is that the United States should end the military occupation of Iraq.
The only thing agreed upon by the Shiites, Sunnis and Kurds following the recent bombing of the Samarra Mosque is that the United States needs to end the military occupation of Iraq.
The only way for the United States to regain the trust of the Iraqi people is to clearly and diplomatically demonstrate our intentions of leaving their country.
Step 1: The first step in this diplomatic process is to sit down with the newly elected government of Iraq and agree upon a timeline for the withdrawal of U.S. forces. If the Iraqi Parliament wants the United States to leave in six days, we need to start packing our bags in six days. If the Iraqi Government wants us to leave in six months then we need to adhere to that timeline. Once the two sovereign nations agree upon a timeline, then we need to live up to our agreement every step of the way.
Step 2: It is imperative that we reach out and engage both the United Nations and the Arab League in developing a diplomatic solution to this crisis. Without ensuring involvement from the International community, we leave the door open for Iran or Syria to influence the outcome of Iraq’s future government.
Step 3: We need to retain a regional security force in neighboring Kuwait or Turkey that can respond at a moments notice should Iraq need assistance enforcing curfews or keeping the peace.
Step 4: We need to uphold our responsibility of rebuilding schools, hospitals and roads. Building projects should use an Iraqi workforce that seeks to put unemployed Iraqis back to work.
Finally, it needs to be underscored that the situation in Iraq has only grown terrorism and strengthened our enemies. The president's claim that Iraq is part of a "war on terrorism" is further evidence that he does not understand true nature of the problem.
It is time to elect new leaders who understand the complexities of this growing crisis.

Sounds far better than anything Hastert has to offer.
