Bush: The Democrats are Wrong on Iraq

The Democrats are wrong on Iraq. That’s what you told me today in your speech. Hearing about the state of things over there at the moment leaves me wondering if I should believe you.

Let’s see, I was told that Saddam had ties to al Qaeda, but that turned out not to be true. I was told that there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, but that wasn’t true either. I was told that terrorists were being trained in Iraq, that wasn’t true (not when I first heard about it anyway). I was told that Iraqis would welcome our soldiers (with flowers!), but that didn’t happen.

I was then told “Mission Accomplished” in Iraq, but today you said that we should stay until the job is done. I’ve been told that if we stay and fight in Iraq the terrorists would be so busy fighting us there that we won’t need to worry about fighting terrorists here. I guess that doesn’t apply to the good folks in London – how much longer until it doesn’t apply here either?

We were told that we had turned a corner when Saddam was captured, when Iraq held their first elections, when Al-Zarqawi was killed, and at other times I’m sure. I can’t really remember them all; I’ve gotten dizzy going around all these corners.

I’ve been told that everyone is either “with us or against us”; why has no one other than Mr. Blair chosen to stand with us? We won’t even get into all the things I was told about serving justice to Osama bin Laden. I was told the Taliban had been destroyed, but it seems we must’ve missed a few somewhere.

I was told we wouldn’t get into “nation building”; you left out the part about making exceptions for countries that have something to offer the big oil companies. I was told all about “compassionate conservatism”. When does the compassionate part start? I was told you are a “uniter not a divider”; that seems to be at least partially true. Look how you’ve managed to unite the entire world against us.

So, the Democrats are wrong on Iraq? You say if we leave that it “would be a huge mistake.” Granted you are an expert on huge mistakes, but given your track record I think I’ll listen to the Democrats.

In July 2001, I heard Condoleezza Rice say: ‘We are able to keep his arms from him. His military forces have not been rebuilt.’

On 11 September 2001, six hours after the attacks, I heard that Donald Rumsfeld said that it might be an opportunity to ‘hit’ Iraq. I heard that he said: ‘Go massive. Sweep it all up. Things related and not.’

Like Bush preaching "stay the course" in Iraq. Yeah, if we remain addicted to the failures of the past over there we are assured success in the future. Makes perfect sense. Or was that nonsense?
