Is George Allen in legal trouble?
I posted this over the weekend but it sank like a brick. This is for the Monday morning cubicle crowd.

American Prospect Online - Just a Gigolo

My, my, my! It looks like more of George Allen's past is about to come back and bite him.

Just a Gigolo

In the go-go ’90s, George Allen sat on the board of a Virginia tech company. Now, the company faces several class-action suits and an SEC insiders probe.

By Garance Franke-Ruta
Issue Date: 09.12.06

<snip>

Despite the plethora of dubious characters surrounding Xybernaut, the true identity of many of the company’s financiers remains obscure. In the company’s heyday, its officers claimed to have the support of major Wall Street firms, but that was more hype. What SEC records show instead is that during the company’s 16-year history, it relied heavily on offshore firms for financing. And during Allen’s board tenure, it received the vast bulk of its money from outfits based in the most notorious havens for tax cheats and money launderers: the Turks and Caicos, the Cayman Islands, the British Virgin Islands, the Bahamas, Liechtenstein, and Israel.

<snip>

But three things seem clear. First, he did benefit in indirect ways from his association with the company: Allen’s law firm did work for Xybernaut while he was on the board, and its officers contributed to his campaigns. While Allen was serving on the Xybernaut board, he was also a partner at the prestigious Richmond-based law firm McGuire Woods LLP. In 1998 and 1999, the firm billed $315,925 to Xybernaut for legal work and was also granted 1,996 shares of stock in lieu of payment for services rendered. According to a disclosure form candidate Allen filed on May 12, 2000, he earned $450,000 from McGuire Woods from January 1999 through April 2000. During much of that time, the firm was doing work for Xybernaut.

In addition, Xybernaut officers -- four directors, an advisory board member, the comptroller, and an officer’s wife -- donated a total of $10,750 to Friends of George Allen in 1999 and 2000. After Xybernaut retained McGuire Woods to handle its more current legal problems in May 2005, McGuire Woods staff donated $32,500 to Friends of George Allen that very month -- compared to $31,625 during Allen’s entire two-year 1999-2000 Senate campaign.

<more>

It is hard keeping this one within the regulation four paragraphs because it is such a long article. George Allen is sprinkled throughout and more concentrated at the end.

To paraphrase the last two of the three "things that seem clear":
Second: Allen's association provided a cover of respectability even though some of the business associations were of questionable character.

Third: What sort of director was Allen to allow the pipe deals and other shady investments that destroyed the company when he was supposed to be protecting the interests of the shareholders?

The third seems a lot like his attitude in the Senate. He is more interested in rubber stamping the Bush agenda and promoting himself within that realm of Republicans than protecting the interests of his constituents -- the people of Virginia.

1. Allen is another in a long line of Republican bags of garbage that...
needs to be thrown in the landfill. If this asswipe ever becomes President I am heading for Canada.

7. He played at UVa you know
By "played" I mean he walked on and was the son of the Redskins coach so they let him hang around because hell he wasn't costing them anything and plus how bad would you have to suck to be the 4th string QB on the UVa squad in the early 70's which was barely a step above intermurals and the real fun was going on in the stands were everyone was getting silly drunk anyway?

school with him. This classmate is as sickened by Allen as I am and recently relayed the following story about an incident that occurred before class one day.

A couple of students were discussing a UVa game in which a black player had missed a pass in the endzone. Allen piped in with, "If it was a watermelon, he'd have caught it." He doesn't even try to hide it. Never has.

14. Because he calls dark-skinned young men "macaca"
And that appeals to a certain segment of Virginia manhood. None that I'm personally acquainted with, but my frame of reference is admittedly pretty small, limited to one former pastor of my congregation.

18. It doesn't appeal to anyone I know either.
and most of the people I know live in Virginia.

I guess I don't travel in racist circles. If any of my friends are racists, they keep it to themselves and I don't know about it. Even the old people I know have evolved. I thought racism was almost dead until the Georges Allen and Bush along with their bunch of Neo-cons reminded me that it isn't.

I forget which number was placed after George Bush's name, but if Bush is King George IV, then Allen wants to be King George V.

Suit and tie thievery seems to be a requirement for prominence in the Republican Party, like killing a man is in the Mafia....

10. So Virginians have a choice between a racist/crook/Bush rubber stamp/
chickenhawk, and a former Navy Secretary vet.....and the crook's still ahead.

The Webb campaign has to be convinced to go after Allen on the character issue in a big way and keep pounding and pummeling. I know there's a segment of the population that will vote for Allen no matter what, but this is also the state that elected Mark Warner - not the most liberal of Dems, but a Dem nonetheless. It can be done.

22. Happy to oblige.
He's a major creep. I'd love to read the book his sister wrote a few years ago. Talks about what a bully he was/is. I can't believe that after all these years, people in VA still love him because of his Dad!? I think the folks in Northern VA are wise to him...but those further south still think he's great.

26. What the press isn't saying about Allen
Edited on Mon Aug-21-06 11:42 PM by sknabt
I don't know about his past legal problems but his "macaca" moment is starting to stink. At first, I wrote it off as nothing. The press was soft-peddling it. Right-winger Fred Barnes joked on The Beltway Boys nobody knows what "macaca" is - it's just some made-up word.

I bought it, too. Frankly, I never heard of it. Then, one of Allen's hometown papers, the Richmond Times-Dispatch, publishes an article noting that "macaca" is a genus of monkeys. There's a suspicious smell there. But still, good ol' boy and not so bright Allen knows this bit of trivia? It's a stretch.

Then I do some simple research to find it's a well know racial slur. Something I've yet to hear the media mention.

http://sknabt.eyesonfox.org/?p=18

If the media gets past the Allen campaign spin and publishes the truth, Allen's toast. Even in sleepy old Virginia.

27. It is a common insult in Tunisia wher Allen's mother was raised.
The article talks about an investigation that is just beginning. He might have future legal problems. He should know better. After all, he is a lawyer.

If Martha went to jail, he could too. Wouldn't he look good in stripes?

If he went to jail, he could also be disbarred.
