GOP's Financial Edge Shrinks
Challengers Gain On Incumbents

By Zachary A. Goldfarb
Special to The Washington Post
Sunday, August 20, 2006; Page A01

For political finance experts, the data are striking because they show that the usual fundraising advantage of incumbents -- who tend to have more access to special-interest money --is durable but not impervious to competing trends. This year, these include a highly motivated base of Democratic activists and low approval ratings for President Bush and the Republican leadership in Congress.

If anything, the financial figures show that political success can be self-reinforcing. After this year's first-quarter fundraising period, which ended March 31, operatives and campaign funding specialists were struck by how a surge in small, individual contributions was lifting many Democratic candidates -- incumbents and challengers alike -- closer to parity with historically better-funded Republicans.

1. I sent a donation
to Jim Webb. I am not a Virginian. I've never even been to Virginia.

My Democratic Senator's seat is safe, so no need to donate there. Might as well send some buck to where they will be of use.

3. Thank you for supporting Jim Webb--He need $1 million by Labor Day
to counter the ads from the swift boaters which will be coming out.

Also, having met and listened to Jim Webb on several occasions since he began running for the senate seat currently held by Allen, I have been so very impressed by this man. He is truly a person of integrity. He is accepting no PAC or special interest money and the Republicans are going all out for Allen! So, thank you so very much!

5. Yes, I too am impressed
My friend across the street has been sent to Iraq, he's been there for two weeks now, he is in
the National Guard and is 55 years old. I want the Congress to have leaders who realized what
the soldiers go through and don't see war as an excuse for more pork for the defense contractors.

8. the best part is, the single party drive is dead
people are not going to live in United Republican States, with everything for the
rich and nothing for everybody else.
