If you wear 'subversive' clothing, what reaction do you get?
And if not 'subversive' clothing, maybe 'subversive' bumper stickers.

I'm old enough not to give two shits what anyone thinks about me. A left wing Archie Bunker, in some ways.

Some time ago, I was given to wearing 'subversive' t-shirts.

Sparkly was initially pretty worried I'd piss somebody off with my in your face sloganeering.

It hasn't happened. They always elicit smiling glances of approval. Or actual out-loud compliments or words of agreement.

To be fair, I've also seen people look at them and obviously read them. But always - always - they just look away. No expression change. They could easily be disgusted. Or the could also be just plain shy.

But it has never caused me a problem, ever. And more often than not it leads to a conversation (I'm also not at all shy) about polictics. So far, its all been good stuff.

What's been your experience?

1. I usually get a thumbs up
Occasionally I'll get a snarky note left on my car. My bumper stickers were more "in your face" in the past. I've toned it down some, but one glance at my truck makes it clear where my politics are at.

2. I get more comments from my "Knotty Frogs" shirt
than I do from my George H.W. Bush "I should have pulled out" shirt.

3. I Have A "Meet The Fuckers" T-Shirt
Would that be considered subversive? I have to be careful where I wear it because I live in a rural area with small towns, wtc., and I frequently run into students of mine, but if I go visit the relives in Milwaukee, well, that's another story. I have another "Pinnochio President" shirt with * on puppet strings - that one's a little more tame. I've worn that one and no one has said a thing to me.

4. My most complemented on T-shirt...

Is my "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" one. Here in the Happy Valley you can't take two steps without seeing a political one, so they rarely even register on people.

5. I also am old enough not to care what folks say anymore
My SIL and I made up a tshirt that says "Worst President ever" with a great pic of Bozo and some words on the back. Made it up @ 2.5 years ago. Wore it down to the closest city for dinner one day. City has a rep of being very red. I was honestly scared that some one would take a poke at me.
So we sat in the middle of the dining area (Pizza Hut) and person after person came up and patted my back or shook my hand. Probably 15 in all! I was amazed.
Since then I wear one nearly every day. In all this time I have had only one person say anything negative at Christmas 2 years ago. Some middle aged guy got right in my face and said "you are entirely wrong" And I responded "You should sign up for Iraq". He left in a huff.
Occasionally I get a sideways glance. But I get at least 2 compliments everytime I wear it in public. Just Friday I got 5 compliments.
Really, we are the majority.

6. I got great responses to my "Impeach Bush" T-shirt . . .
When I wore it in London and Bucharest. Grins and thumbs-up (they could clearly figure out on sight I was a 'Murrican, since who else would wear such a thing).

In Frederick, where I now live, I get pretty much the same reaction as you report. 'Course I haven't worn it for a several months. Maybe I'll see what happens tomorrow, when I go to a local kite festival.

A few years ago (in Alameda, CA), I put up a giant poster on my garage door with "Support our troops/Impeach Bush" and I got a few catty remarks when I was mowing the lawn.

7. I get more positive than negative comments
to my bumper stickers:
Bush is a fascist
If you aren't outraged you aren't paying attention
Bush/Cheney 1984 - War is Peace

Vote the son of a bush out.

but I have had one lady follow me into a parking lot to tell me I just leave America...When I told her she should be ashamed for voting for bush she rolled up her window and left.

Then one other guy rolled down his window at an exit ramp red light and said, "if Bush is a fascist then you are a communist" I just gave him a big smile and went on since the light had turned.

8. I used to wear my "schools/ air force bake sale" t-shirt whenever the
recruiters were around. they, of course, just LOVED it.

here in red, red colorado springs, though, my "in your face" t-shirts, both political and religious (after all, this is the home of fungus and new life)generally get smiles and thumbs up.

9. Favorable Reactions Mostly
We still have a lot of people running around here with "W" stickers on their cars, so I was ready for unfavorable reactions to my blue dot, and "Re-elect Gore 2008" stickers. But so far I've had people pull up beside me to show me that they also have a blue dot, or they ask me where I got them.
