"Too Far to the Right" Hope in Colorado Springs
'Too far to the right'
Moderates reject Lamborn, line up for Fawcett
by Cara DeGette

"I am a Republican, and I will be supporting Jay Fawcett."
Those words — spoken by respected longtime community business leader Marv Strait — might sound like heresy to the ears of many local Grand Old Party loyalists. For many Republican officeholders, or those who may one day want to become politicians, such a public statement could very well spell for them the kiss of death. But to Strait, a Republican for 51 years, supporting a Democrat running for Congress is really no big deal.

"I've always voted for the individual, and in this case, I support Jay," Strait says.

Strait is not the only high-profile local Republican who has publicly come out for Fawcett, an Air Force Academy graduate and retired lieutenant colonel who served in Desert Storm. Last week, the day after Doug Lamborn won a hotly contested six-way Republican primary, Colorado Springs City Councilman Scott Hente threw his support behind Fawcett. James Stewart, the president of the Black Chamber of Commerce, has also endorsed Fawcett, and this week Jerry Heimlicher indicated he will likely support the Democrat.

1. I am third generation native of Colorado Springs.
Sadly, I no longer live there, but I visit my aging mother frequently. I was raised by conservative parents who voted for only one Democrat in their lives (LBJ -- a vote they regretted). However, the politics of C Springs has shifted so far to the right that my conservative mom looks like a communist by comparison.

Colorado Springs will not become a left wing enclave in my lifetime, but please PLEASE keep trying to counter balance the crazed fundies.

Many thanks.

2. We're working on it
Fawcett may not be left enough for me, but, baby steps my freinds. He's miles ahead of the other candidate in my opinion. I was actually hoping the republicans would put up somebody like Lamborn, a Bush stooge with no military background and way too the right. He makes our moderate Dem look even more moderate, good news for this area and this race!

4. Indeed. We might even get the unthinkable - sweeping Rethug

Congressassholes out.

Musgrave's in danger.
O'Donnell is a moron.
Fawcett's getting Republican endorsements other than Lamborn.
Winter's gonna kick the shit outta Xenophobe Tancredo.

Along with our three current Dem seats, (John Salazar, DeGette <my rep>, Udall)

Giving us 7 Dems, Zero Rethugs.

All we need to do is boot Mallard out in '08, and we'll have completed the sweep (pending if the Dems hold on to their seats), giving us true-blue state once enjoyed years past. (which hopefully will include a Democratic Governor, Democratic Lt Governor, Democratic AG, and Democratic SoS this year)

If I was Bill Ritter, the first task to do is levy EXTREMELY heavy taxes on Focus on the Fruitcakes (Family) in a huge attempt to kick them out to somewhere more Republican, oh let's say Idaho or Wyoming. Nobody'll care. (My apologies to Dems in Wyoming and Idaho.)

6. I had that sticker!
Got a new car and haven't replaced it yet. Funny thing is, I got a lot of support from that sticker, people loved it. The Springs isn't as nutty as most people think, like most places it's just the nuts that scream the loudest. I'm hoping the normal people here have had enough of Dobson and his ilk defining our district and will look for a more moderate candidate this fall. It's starting to look that way!
