How to deal with LYING emails like the "Gold Star Mothers and Hillary"
Edited on Fri Aug-18-06 01:10 PM by Cell Whitman
here's ChiciB1's post on the email which IS STILL going around
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x2785437

here's how to handle them beyond sending them the snopes debunking pages.

http://www.snopes.com/politics/military/goldstar.asp

http://urbanlegends.about.com/library/blclinton.htm

This has worked for me and has been fun to watch.

Since these usually come from holier than thou "Christian" Republicans...when you send the originator the debunking links say something like this...

"When I read this it just didn't sound right. I get emails like this often and for some reason they are always from conservatives. I did some basic googling and found out that this was a lie like the other ones I regularly receive. As a Christian I am sure you do not want to perpetuate a blatant lie, a falsehood about anyone, even Hilary Clinton. I am sure this is not the kind of thing Jesus would do. Please send all the people you have passed this lie onto this link showing it was a lie and set the record straight. And also, please copy me with your correction. Please do as Jesus would do here and set the record straight."

I have shamed several wingnuts into doing this. One couldn't remember who all he had sent the lie to so he just sent out a notice to everyone in his address book. :7

Thing is, there are many people they send these to who know it is a well debunked lie, but they don't lift a finger to set the record straight. I see that at Freeperville a lot. Someone will post a lie and I know many of them know it is lie but they don't say a word. The conservative movement is an openly deceptive movement. They believe in what the cults call "Heavenly Deception" which means it is OK to lie for God and they have been conditioned to believe they and only they are doing the work of God.

You will notice that you never get these kinds of things from the left, at least I don't. That should tell people something.

anyway, try that sometime and sit back and watch the fun.

1. Nice. Try to use the term "Bearing False Witness" that's supposed to
a no-no for these people.

6. believing you are personally tied to God's work
and others are not is the root of most all cults including the cult of conservatism.

5. When we make a mistake we correct it
There have been false rumors passed along by folks on the Left, but when it's brought to our attention we take great pains to set the record straight. Something about us liberals and our insistence on knowledge and facts :)

That, and we aren't afraid of the truth!

7. Just Wanted To Let You Know That I Took YOUR Advice...
Have received nothing back yet! Guess it takes them time to digest this stuff!!!

And I did hit the "reply to all" so it would reach each of them from each email.

8. the one who sent it to you I wouldn't
send his personal list a 'reply all' least not for a few days -- give him a chance to correct it. If he sees you sent tyhe people he sent it to a note then he would not have a need to send them anything. does that make sense?

I agree with that after you have given the one who sent it to you in the first place time to correct it and cc you on his correction. If he fails to do so, then 'reply all" all you want...be nice cause many on the down line may be democrats who are receiving the needle from their rightwing friends.

Obviously, he will only send it to his direct group. Most of these lying hateful emails I get are forwarded to hundreds of people. I guess I am saying cc the ones down the line but not the ones to whom he personally sent it to directly, those on his direct list that you were originally cc'd in on - you might want to give him a chance to do the correction...

I know this post is wordy hope you understood what I am trying to say...

if there were hundreds of people who have been forwarded the email then some of them who are right wingers will get mad at being called out as a bunch of controlled chumps and they will send you nasty emails telling you to take them off your email list and ask you what right you have to email them. I have been down that road also. Some of them will be pissed because they know being associated with someone who sedns out bullshit makes them look bad, so they will try to take it out on you. :)

good luck... btw, if you did get one which had a many groups it had been forwarded through, most of them likley know it was a lie, but none probably tried to correct it...
