Sadly, this is correct. Even more sadly, Tramm's a friend of my dad's. Need to have a word with Dad about this.

Tramm doesn't seem to have been taking a snide tone, and he's an old man who grew up in a racist time...might have been unintentional (although that doesn't make it much less insulting and bigoted).

3. I don't know about best. But certainly rarer than expected.

There was a NYT spread in the last year about racial minorities, esp. blacks, and swimming. It called for outreach and support to get black kids into swimming pools.

Couldn't find the NYT article, but others will serve the purpose.

There are varying reasons given for the lack of black swimmers, which don't hold for other minorities, but which have been suggested anyway. In addition to socio-economic factors, one pundit tried to pull in slavery--slaves were discouraged from swimming, since being a good swimmer frequently meant a greater chance of slavery. But even sports like lacrosse where there's little reason to suspect SES factors in in a big way show a racial skew.
