Collins endorses Lieberman in his re-election bid
PORTLAND, Maine — Sen. Joseph Lieberman´s bid for re-election as an independent received a solid endorsement from the chairwoman of the Homeland Security Committee on Tuesday.

Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, said she fully supports Lieberman, ranking Democrat on the committee, who´s running as an independent after losing the Democratic primary to political newcomer Ned Lamont.

"I very much hope that Sen. Lieberman will be re-elected in the fall. His is an important voice of moderation and experience in the Senate," she said.

Lamont managed to defeat the Democratic party´s 2000 vice presidential nominee in an election that was viewed by many as a referendum on Iraq and President Bush´s handling of the war. Lieberman´s decision to run as an independent sets up a three-way race between Lieberman, Lamont and Republican Alan Schlesinger.

I'm still hoping Bush will appoint her to some administration position. She's horrid as a Senator.

1. Susan Collins is a lot easier to listen to than Neaderthals like Jeff
Sessions or Orrin Hatch, but other than that, I could live without her in the Senate.

How pathetic that Lieberman is only attracting endorsements from Republicans at this point.

3. Good morning, Old Crusoe...I agree.
She's more tolerable than what is typical for that party these days, but she's pretty useless and often does that Specter-esque thing where she'll talk like she's upset with some Bush policy, then fall in line when it's time to vote.

4. Every Repub Senator and Congresscritter MUST GO.
Doesn't matter if they are moderate or even liberal. They help give the majority to the radical lunatics. I hope the rational and sane citizens of Maine will realize this and vote another Repub out of the government. Can't help her that she's aligning herself with warmongers.

5. Err, don't Republicans usually endorse the Republican in the race?
Err, don't Republicans usually endorse the Republican in the race?

Well, on second thought, nevermind -- I answered my own question.
Joe always *WAS* and still *IS* a Republican at heart, he just
used our party to further his political career.

(Damned shame we trusted him in 2000, though.)

6. One would think Republicans would endorse Republicans
Edited on Wed Aug-16-06 06:57 AM by MaineDem
But this is Bushzaro World.

By the way, I think saying Lieberman was a Republican at heart is wrong. He has a strong pro-labor record and I think it's only recently that his loyalties have changed. I want to hope that if he is elected as a third-party candidate he will still caucus with the Dems and vote for a Dem as Majority Leader.

8. I agree - but Lieberman has not changed - strong Dem with Iraq/Israel on
the GOP view only -

and with Insurance company (he is from the Insurance company state) anti single payer national health views only.

If we didn't need single payer national health so badly, and if out foreign policy was not so screwed up, Joe would be easy to vote for as a Dem.

13. Lieberman is not a Zell Miller -type
He's always been an acceptable Democrat and the people in CT have liked him.

I think if he had just accepted the result of the primary vote, supported the wimmer, and helped the Democratic ticket, he'd still be considered a decent Democrat. I think what he's doing now is totally wrong and I'm very disappointed in his choices. It bothers me to see him chastised, though, although I understand he's brought it on himself. I don't see him switching parties; I hope the hatred doesn't drive him to that.

14. His behavior since losing legitimately is most disturbing
The idea that this is HIS seat and HIS alone regardless of what the primary voters wanted smacks of sour grapes.

15. Who's hatred will drive "him" to that?
The day after LIEberman lost the primary by 4% he called ME and 80% of registered Democrats "helpers of Al Queda". To hell with Sore Loserman. Any Senator that calls myself and everyone here on DU a "helper of Al Queda" should be stomped on and removed from the Senate.

And who are you to apologize for that Cheney parrot?
