Ted Kennedy: Enough is enough, demand an Iraqi timetable:
Please add your name if you feel so inclined...

Dear xxx,

Our current "stay the course" strategy in Iraq is a failed strategy and the American people know it, as last week's election results make abundantly clear!

The Bush Administration hid its reasons for going to war behind phony evidence and cherry-picked intelligence. That dishonesty, combined with the Administration's incompetence in planning for the war, has left our troops in Iraq with Mission Impossible -- and our soldiers continue to pay for it with their lives.

The last thing we need is a Republican Rubber Stamp Congress that refuses to stand up to this Administration and demand a change in course. Declare your support for such change today and demand a timetable for withdrawal from Iraq.

The bloodletting in Iraq shows no sign of ebbing. Recent weeks have brought warnings that the situation may soon be even worse. Both our top general in the region and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff told Congress they see a high risk that what was called the "liberation" of Iraq could soon become an all-out civil war.

Did Republicans in Congress heed these dire warnings? No.

Just last week President Bush responded to the generals' warning with this amazing statement: "You know, I hear people say, well, civil war this, civil war that. The Iraqi people decided against civil war."

That dangerous denial of reality tells us what we need to know: changing course in Iraq can happen only if we change Congress. Like the voters who made their choice so clear at the ballot box, you can be heard right now as well. Join me today and demand a timetable for withdrawal from Iraq.

In Britain, Prime Minister Tony Blair heard the same warning from his ambassador that our generals delivered here: Iraq could fly apart at any moment. "The prospect of a low intensity civil war," he said, "is probably more likely at this stage than a successful and substantial transition to a stable democracy."

Even after all these obvious warnings, President Bush continues to whistle past the graveyard. He'll keep on whistling as long as his Rubber Stamp Republican Congress is there to ratify his failed strategy. As Illinois Democratic Congressman and DCCC Chairman Rahm Emanuel has said, "Being a rubber stamp for George Bush is politically dangerous to life threatening."

Our goal is to throw out this Rubber Stamp Congress in November and restore real accountability in the White House. Wake up, America -- and make change happen!

Thank you,

Senator Edward M. Kennedy
