Firm closes (Col)gate
to union plans

It is an old, unfortunate story that keeps repeating itself: The right of workers to unionize freely is under attack by employers.

This time, workers say, the problem is at the Bronx-based Colgate Scaffold and Equipment Corp.

The workers say that although a majority voted on June 21 to be represented by the New York City District Council of Carpenters and Joiners of America, Colgate Scaffold has refused to sit down to negotiate. Instead, the company filed a complaint with the National Labor Relations Board.

Since March, when efforts to organize the workers began, the company has been harassing union supporters by giving them unreasonable and unsafe workloads, the workers charge. As a result, they say, some have been forced to quit their jobs.
