Romney, Kerry spar over fight on terror
Governor raps senator for criticizing Iraq war
By Rick Klein, Globe Staff | August 12, 2006

WASHINGTON --

The terrorist attack foiled by British authorities prompted a battle of words yesterday
between a pair of presidential contenders from Massachusetts, with Governor Mitt Romney
lashing out at Senator John F. Kerry for suggesting that the war in Iraq has harmed the
nation's security.

snip--
``Osama bin Laden and Al Qaeda have succeeded in isolating the United States,"
Kerry, a Democrat, said during a conference call organized on behalf of Patrick Murphy,
a Democratic candidate in a Pennsylvania House race.
``Afghanistan and Pakistan are where the fight against Al Qaeda is, not in Iraq."

Asked about Kerry's comments during an appearance on the MSNBC cable network, Romney blasted Kerry.
The governor said the senator failed to recognize that the United States is locked
in a long-term war against terrorists and that Iraq is a central front.

``I think it shows a complete lack of understanding of the kind of enemy that we're facing,"
said Romney, a Republican. ``This is not a small group of wackos in the hills
that all we have to do is go find one person and it suddenly goes away."

In turn, Kerry's communications director, David Wade, questioned the governor's
knowledge of issues related to Iraq and terrorism. ``Mitt Romney's command of
national security is about as real as the weapons of mass destruction in Iraq," Wade said.

:)

snip--> ;)
Lamont's campaign manager, Tom Swan, blasted Lieberman for suggesting on Thursday
that leaving Iraq would be
``a tremendous victory by the same people who wanted to blow up these planes."

``Joe Lieberman's fear campaign is off to a quick start, and it won't be long
until Republican money starts completely funding his campaign,"
Swan said in a fund-raising appeal sent yesterday.

1. The Kerry camp handled this beautifully, and Wade's remarks on
Romney's shallow grasp of foreign policy are note-perfect.

Senator Kerry has long served on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and if he or other Democrats call Bush's foreign policy into question, Romney is among the least qualified of opportunists to object.

Mitt's playing to the yahoo grandstands and whipping up a national profile for his '08 plans, in lieu of a respectable resume'.

13. You got it. I think Romney took the one-dimensional "Here I Am"
approach and Wade effortlessly tossed him out the window.

Nice work by the Kerry crew & a fine post on DU.

Isnt he gone yet?
He looks so manly posing for those Big Dig photo ops wearing his hard hat and all. I'm sure he will go far, hopefully Utah.

8. Some Credit Due Romney ...
I have to give him some credit although obviously he is only speaking to a perceived national audience as people here havent listened to anything he has had to say for years.
But at least it seems that his term as governor will run out before he officialy resigns. That hasnt happened in some time; it must be worth our giving him some credit right?
I guess that even Bush doesnt like him enough to give him some plush meaningless appointment but lets not dull the gleam of this romney high moment. He served out an entire term as governor ... splendid.
And on a bright note ... Have you heard we might actualy be going to get a governor this fall?
We havent had one in what now, 20 years?
I cant wait.

And I demand a Democrat as Gov!!
Healey needs to go pound sand in Florida. I'm sure her family misses her.

I don't think anybody likes him! He's just so very 'plastic'! :grr:

3. K&R
Kerry v. Romney, or another way of looking at this: realism v. fearmongering.
