Bill Clinton: Philosophy vs. Ideology...THIS IS A MUST HEAR..
Bill Clinton was in Seattle on July 31st speaking on behalf of the re-election of Jim McDermott. Listening to what he had to say reminds us all what we have been missing in Clinton.

This is one of the best speeches and explains the difference for most people can understand between
the Republicans, that believe in ideology and
the Democrats ,that believe in philosophy.

He is as always a great speaker.

1. Please, this is an important speech don't let the thread die.

To explain to a lot of people in easy terms that they can understand the differences of ideology and philosophy as applied to republicans and Democrats.

It doesn't matter your view on Clinton...

I'm trying to find the text but can only find the audio.
The speech was played in parts on Thom Hartman's show and is well worth listening to but I only found the complete speech.

The text will probably be 10 pages long though, knowing Clinton.....LOL.

Link to a speech by JFK that eerily pre-echoes (can't think of the word I really want) Clinton's.

26. Sorry
Nice rhetoric, nice delivery - but that's about it.

Philosophy vs. ideology? Hogwash. Especially from a man that is the epitome of the sugarcoater: he was a prime mover of neolib economics and "free trade", the very core of rw economic ideology. He supported big business - just different businesses... which is why he can rail against pharma and insurance (no mention of the AMA, fwiw).

The philosophy/ideology argument is sophistry - the REAL difference between the Dems and GOPers is tactics.... and the names of their taskmasters.

An effective speech nonetheless - which isn't hard to do considering the incompetence of the admin.

What I DIDN'T like was a case of Bubba following GOP "ideology" - the healthcare part of the speech. He noted SOME differences between American and Canadian and Swiss healthcare systems. Yet he doesn't support a nationalized healthcare system such as those run by the Canadians and Swiss - but merely a reform of private healthcare. That is disingenuous.

Stil, an effective communicator that at least reflects some of the values that progressives fight for.

27. Like I said and you said
"an effective communicator that at least reflects some of the values that progressives fight for"

He should have spoken like this in the 2000 and 2004 election but still

good speech and talking points we can use.

28. Oh, I agree
I just don't like the Clinton hagiography because the fellow is not all he's cracked up to be (from a progressive standpoint). He looks and sounds great compared to the falangists we have now though!

I am not so sure of Bubba was a positive or negative political influence. He certainly didn't serve as a "counterrevolutionary" to the prevailing rw swing - at best he was a breakwater potus that temporarily slowed the move to the right. And his economic policies were textbook neolib, down to NAFTA.

He'd have made a helluva Rockefeller Republican a couple of decades ago. But then again a Rockefeller Repub would be a liberal dem in this day and age, which is a great pity considering what is at stake.

Indeed, a good communicator. What -I- miss (even if he was equally disingenuous in many respects) is rhetoric like this: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/presidents/35_kennedy/psources/ps_ameruniv.html

29. How things change, eh?
"The United States, as the world knows, will never start a war. We do not want a war. We do not now expect a war. This generation of Americans has already had enough -- more than enough -- of war and hate and oppression. We shall be prepared if others wish it. We shall be alert to try to stop it. But we shall also do our part to build a world of peace where the weak are safe and the strong are just."

Ooops

It seems such a waste for BC to not be president again. I hope the Democrats win in 2006 and then repeal the repeal the 22nd amendment.
