Is it looking like any incumbant Republican Senators

(Looking for a future example for a smart ass Repub at another board)

Thank you, thank you very much.

1. Chafee?
Right now it's too close to call-- but that's a danger sign for a respected incumbent.

And his opponent is endorsed by the Club for Growth, which means tax cuts and humongous deficits.

There was a Republican in the House of Representatives who was challenged from the right, and lost, on the same day as Lieberman/Lamont-- was it Michigan?

2. Yeah ... Michigan
Walberg? The guy who beat him was one who favored the death penalty for being gay.

Nice folks, huh?

5. You'll never hear MSM talk about it.
It doesn't jive with the "democrats purge moderates" theme.

6. Chafee is the only one
The RNC sent in an outside group to salvage his GOTV. Two weeks ago I thought Laffey would win the primary but now a couple of sources I respect think Chafee will pull it out.

8. I thought the RNC was secretly backing Chafee?
I remember some group or pac running ad claiming Laffey was a tax and spend liberal, while Chafee voted for the tax cuts.

10. Laffey is a right wing wacko
A current mayor.

I really doubt an organization ran ads claiming Laffey was too liberal. If anything, they would apply that to Chafee.

I sampled a right wing Rhode Island blog a couple of weeks ago to get a feel for the race. Anchor something. I know the word anchor was in the title of the website. Anyway, they had posts and comments dating to late 2004, thrilled that a true conservative might take on Chafee.

It read very similar to the anti-Lieberman theme here, so I expected Laffey to win the primary, until I read the GOP had sent in a well respected outside group to revamp Chafee's GOTV. The national party would probably prefer Laffey, all things being equal, but of course that's not the case in the matchup against Whitehouse.

Independents are allowed to vote in Rhode Island's primary and they will favor Chafee. Just depends what the breakdown is, percentage of Republicans and percentage of independents. I saw one estimate Chafee needs 50% of the primary voters to be indies. If so, no chance. He's done.

But within the last few days others have told me Laffey is too much of a weirdo to be nominated. He apparently has had plenty of controversy during his term as mayor, and is a "willfully polarizing figure," according to one link someone sent me.

I have no idea. I'm not going to spend much time analyzing their primary, especially when such a low number of voters will decide it.

7. I don't know about the primaries, but ...
In the fall election Santorum of Pennsylvania, Burns of Montana, Chaffee of Rhode Island, DeWine of Ohio, Talent of Missouri, are all likely to lose! Now if Harold Ford can only win in Tennessee we have a good chance or taking control of the Senate!

14. How about Webb AND Ford?
Sure, it would be great if Webb could defeat Allen, but so far the polls do not look too promising. Why not Ford in Tennessee? I find him to be a very personable candidate myself and more likely to win in the fall.

12. well, how about a republican governor?
Gov. Murkowski is in a bit of trouble in Alaska ... he might lose in the primary ... he will definitely lose in the general ...

here's a link: http://www.rasmussenreports.com/2006/State%20Polls/August%202006/AlaskaGovernor.htm

btw, there's another Democratic Senator who is running neck and neck with a primary challenger ... he's the story on that race: http://www.rasmussenreports.com/2006/State%20Polls/August%202006/HawaiiSenate.htm

Akaka (Hawaii) leads his challenger by only 47-45 ... the challenger, Ed Case, sounds pretty conservative but i don't know too much about him ...

13. We want Murkowski to win the primary
Knowles will feast on him. But Sarah Palin is a young attractive woman with a high approval rating and reputation as a bit of a maverick. Knowles just lost statewide in 2004 and might be considered yesterday's news, if a red state is given a fresh untainted option.
