http://www.dailykos.com/story/2006/8/9/12595/75433I am in a room right now with Sen. Salazar (D-CO) who earlier had suggested that he might support Lieberman regardless of the outcome of the Connecticut primary.
We are in the HQ of Ed Perlmutter candidate for Colorado's 7th District, and he and Ed just shared the podium at a press conference out front.
They were both asked about the impact and the message of the Lieberman/Lamont race.
Salazar praised Joe Lieberman and stated that their offices had been in contact in the past 24 hours. He did not specify the outcome of those discussions but said that, "We would see what is going to happen soon in Connecticut." Later he broadened that to, "We will see what they do, perhaps in the next days or weeks or perhaps months, we'll see."
He did state that the message was clear from that primary that voters no longer wanted to 'stay the course' with the administration in Washington, not with an endless war without plan, a failed medical system, nor a litany of other Bush administration missteps.
Perlmutter also praised Lieberman but came out in support of the decisions made by the voters. "I like Joe Lieberman, but the people of Connecticut have made their choice and I respect that."
Perlmutter said that it was a clear signal that the same change he sees people wanting in CO-7 is wanted by voters across the country, and that CO-7 is going to be a bellweather for a trend that will wrest Congress from the Republicans.
Unlike Lamont's district, Perlmutter is in an almost perfectly balanced swing district with 1/3 Dems, 1/3 Rep, and 1/3 Unaffiliated. For him to support the will of Connecticut is not a politically convienent stance, and I respect that even when standing next to a Senator who will be a great source of support to him, and when speaking to an audience that was right down the center, he was willing to stand for the principle of the Democratic process.
I just shook the Senator's hand and said, "I hope that Connecticut plays out in a way so that you are able to support the Democratic nominee, however that might happen."
He looked at me and said, "Well, we'll see."
