RI Senate: Chafee (R) 38%, Whitehouse (D) 44% (Rasmussen)
August 9, 2006
Senator Lincoln Chafee

Republican Senator Lincoln Chafee, marginally leading his Democratic opponent in previous surveys, is trailing for the second Rasmussen Reports election poll in a row. Democrat Sheldon Whitehouse now leads 44% to 38% (see crosstabs). A month ago, Whitehouse was ahead 46% to 41%.

Chafee faces a primary battle with Cranston Mayor Steve Laffey, not the GOP's best hope here. In a match-up with Laffey, Whitehouse leads 55% to 31%.

Chaffee's tribulations are not unique. Our recent polling shows that Democrats are holding their own in Senate contests, including in states where it was thought the GOP had a decent chance to pick up a seat (see commentary on trends). Meanwhile, five incumbent Republican senators, including Chafee, now trail Democrat challengers (that list also includes Senators Santorum, Burns, DeWine, and Talent).

New Ads Focus on War in Iraq

Please take a minute to watch our newest ads, focusing on the war in Iraq:
http://www.whitehouseforsenate.com/?page_id=263

In “Body Armor,” Sheldon shares stories he’s heard from the parents of soldiers
who had to buy body armor for their children serving in Iraq.
In “Iraq,” he talks about where he stands on the war and the need
for a rapid, responsible withdrawal.

But he has a lot of other good idea's also, on other issues, imho!
Read his website! ;)

Chafee is actually one of the Reps I can tolerate, but I have said on this very forum that we must target moderate Reps just the way they target moderate Dems.

While I'd love it if Chafee was the face of that party the bottom line is we need seats and for every Rep that holds a seat in a solid Democratic state that is one less chance we have of taking back the country from the goons.

The Repukes went after Democrats all over the South because they knew the South was their home base. even if the Dems were very moderate or even Conservative, it did not matter. The goal is to remove centrist politicians IF you can put someone in the seat more to your ideological liking.

We now need to think about taking at least one of the seats in Maine, splitting Pennsylvania, and getting Coleman's seat back in Minnesota. This is where things are heading I believe.

8. Chafee couldn't have enjoyed last night's results
We've focused only on Lieberman and McKinney, but there was also a GOP congressman who was booted 55-45 in the primary, due to being too moderate for the base.
