1. What is bad about this Johnson fellow who defeated her?
Honestly I did not follow that race particularly closely. So I don't want to speak ill or out of turn. Is he overly conservative?

I've just never been able to gauge whether McKinney was actually worthy of the fawning on DU or if it was just another of the daily/weekly/monthly DU "cult of personality" type things wherein it doesn't matter whether someone is actually a good person or whether they do their actual job well, because if they criticize Bush then this makes them a god among men/women and therefore any criticism of them means the person criticizing is a Bush loving republican.

See my original post here:
Support Cynthia McKinney

There was a whole variety of good reasons for supporting Cynthia McKinney based on real issues, that relate to concerns of people of all races.

I don't understand what people had against McKinney... Her detractors just keep on using perjorative adjectives like "shrill", or "nutty", or "embarassment", but they rarely bring up any details, except the Capitol-Hill incident and her father who some say made anti-semitic remarks.

Yet, I know there are good, intelligent Dems that really don't like her, but I just don't understand why. I don't live in Georgia, so maybe I'm just not aware of all the ways she's alienated voters. But it seems like it's just her personality that people don't like.

With respect to Hank Johnson, the election wasn't much about Johnson... Nobody was particulary excited or appalled about Johnson... But McKinney had her strong supporters as well as her strong critics... Personally, I think Johnson won't be very progressive on the issues... I just get that impression, because he hasn't told us much about what he thinks.

4. Here is one concrete problem I had with her
She brought in Frakkahan to campaign for her. That was morally wrong.

6. I don't know much about Farrakhan, but I've heard his rhetoric is
Edited on Wed Aug-09-06 08:16 AM by Quequeg
pretty devisive, especially against Jews.

When you look at the voting record of McKinney, it looks good to me, but I guess her rhetoric was just too divisive or offensive to people. Or something like that.

I live in a safe Republican district (been that way for about 80 years)... My rep is Ray LaHood, a boring, technocrat that follows party orders and never faces a primary challenger... So, I think McKinney is like the opposite of my rep... She'd be a breath of fresh air for me... But perhaps, I'd feel differently if I had lived in Georgia's 4th district and had to have McKinney for most of the last decade.

Still, it seems odd to me, that there's so much focus on "character" issues... It just seems like some creepy Republican smear campaign... This is especially true, since she does have a good voting record.

10. the more they bash McKinney the better I like her!...
Online posters have become a microcosm of mainstream media. When a candidate gets attacked a lot they're serving the voters who sent them to DC. Ultra-rich elitists, who own much of the media, don't like them because they don't OWN them.

15. what exactly did McKinney actually accomplish? And don't give us
Edited on Wed Aug-09-06 06:02 PM by cryingshame
that "spoke out about xyz". She was a freaking Congresscritter... who is supposed to do more then just 'speak out' and show up for votes.

It's the rare DU'er that can actually answer my question, btw. Many just support her cause she said this or that.

2. She really has no one to blame but herself for her loss
She was clearly out of touch with her district. She paid the price.

5. Like it or not , lots of people won't vote for "conspiracy theorists"
And people see her that way because of her 9-11/Carlyle Group views and her allegations of racism at the Capitol.

And she got lots of publicity very recently for missing the important Voting Rights vote.

The Farrakhan crap was mentioned above. And she supported Mugabe (again blaming racism).

Her dad makes no bones about his feelings for Jews. Perhaps she's less vocal about it than Mel Gibson, but people still label her because of this.

Plus, many of her speeches tend to be incomprehensible. She rambles. She sings Pink lyrics, for God's sake. To many people, her career has been one long, though less-publicized, Dean-scream.

Bottom line is, being a congressperson is a job -- and a very important, professional one at that. The person holding that job must give it the respect it deserves. Let's look at a "regular" workplace. Say one of your colleagues does a pretty good job. But at times this person talks like a nutcase without backing up their assertions. They fight with the service staff at your building. They don't show up for important meetings. They invite friends and family members to join you for lunch that you know have done some pretty bad things in their lives. Their deportment is quite often unprofessional. When do you and your co-workers start saying "I don't care what her work history looks like anymore. Surely we can get somebody in here that can do a similar good job without bringing everybody down all the time. Boss, can we start interviewing?"

8. "15 Ways To Quit McKinney" - DailyKos August 6:
"15 Ways To Quit McKinney"
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2006/8/6/173637/0320

(snip)
Like Lieberman...McKinney has neglected her home base, and has chosen instead to embrace the role of a national cheerleader and clown on issues that are either not important or are an anathema to her constituents.
(snip)
(15) She is incapable of taking responsibility. Every self-inflicted bump in her political road is always the fault of anything or anyone but Cynthia. Whether it be big bad Republicans, Jewish citizens, Gays, voter fraud, Faux Dems, White suburbanites, Oil Money, McKinney has yet to find a conspiracy theory she didn't like.
(snip)
Bottom line, a great many local progressives want to oust her. She represents us poorly and has harmed the Democratic Party by providing constant fodder for Rethug attacks.
Yes, Cynthia. We can quit you.

And how will "Sleep Walking" Hank Johnson better address them?

12. So how were the very liberal black folk feeling in her district?
And how does your one friend know what the other liberal white folks were thinking?

I would reckon that her support here was interracial, so I'm not sure why we're separating white from black constituents.

The vote was only yesterday. Do the exit polls indicate that her votes came mainly from her black constituents?

13. here's a good overview of all that she has done
Most won't read it, but for those of you who support her, here is a great list of all the things she's done for her district, from helping rural black farmers to getting more black judges on the benches in georgia.

I lived in and around Atlanta for 25 years. The racism there is culturally accepted and rampant, so of course many whites hate her for being "too black"

but she has a lot to offer and many are thankful for her service

Read about it to know the truth

17. thanks
She has done so much to help the Little Guy, but people love a scapegoat. They love to feed their corporate masters.

Cynthia has done more than anyone of late to help the black people of Georgia. She's dangerous that way.
