Lieberman Consultant: We Pay "A Bit More" Than $15 a Month for Web Hosting

By Paul Kiel - August 8, 2006, 5:09 PM
So was the Lieberman campaign website actually hacked? Or are they just cheap?

Lieberman's internet consultant Dan Geary, who oversees Joe2006.com, says he's still sure that their site suffered a "malicious attack." But when pressed, he said that they weren't sure that it was a "Denial of Service" attack, as he'd said earlier. He didn't have any more information about the nature of the supposed attack. "I've spent 99% of my time speaking about the story," he said.

He also denied that the site was down because of their webhost. Over at DailyKos, Markos reported that the campaign has an agreement with a webhost service called MyHostCamp, for which the campaign pays $15/month. All MyHostCamp sites are down, Markos reported, seeming to indicate that the problem was not caused by a hacker but Lieberman's host company being unable to handle a surge in authentic traffic.

But Geary insisted that the host company was fine. "When we take the site down, the server is fine. . . not the hosting, it's not the bandwidth," he said. Geary said that all of his company's sites are on that server, and that it's owned by someone he works with "all the time."

He denied Markos' report that the campaign paid only $15 a month for service. They pay a "bit more," he said; he couldn't say precisely how much, but said he'd have that information if I called back later.

2. They sure do pay more than $15/month for web hosting
I'm sure it's probably closer to $15.89 or so.

3. Is there public access to Lieberman's campaign expenses?
Like on opensecrets.org or the FEC?

I'm not savvy on Senate campaigns, but it seems that who Lieberman pays for web hosting should be easy to find out if we have access to his campaign expenditures.

Anybody????

4. Okay, $17.99/month
It's still crappy service by a provider that isn't equipped to handle the number of web hits when a site goes national.

That sort of web hosting is perfectly all right for you and me when we want to post pics of the grandkids and show them off to our friends. But when it's the campaign site for a nationally watched race, it had better be able to handle "a bit more" than 30 or 40 hits a day.

But it's SOP for the GOP: Blame your opponent for your own incompetence. Strange that Lieberman would take a page from the Republican playbook, though. Him being a good "centrist" Democrat and everything.

All web hosting I've signed up for is a .99 ending. A 'bit more.'

They guy is full of it. These are his clients, and he doesn't know more about their hosting arrangements, or whether or not his clients were hit with a DOS attack? Come on...we didn't just fall off the bagel truck!
