Lieberman makes final pitch to voters as Connecticut polls open

By Susan Haigh, Associated Press Writer | August 8, 2006

HARTFORD, Conn. --Democratic Sen. Joe Lieberman, locked in a battle with a political novice fueled anti-war sentiment, crisscrossed the state in a final attempt keep his Senate seat and reassure voters going to the polls Tuesday in Connecticut's primary election.

Lieberman planned stops Tuesday in Stratford, Shelton, New Haven, Waterbury, Bristol and Hartford on Tuesday, where polls opened at 6 a.m.

He said that the voters who were upset with him were trying to "send me a message," and he assured them: "I got their message."

If defeated, Lieberman would be only the fourth incumbent senator since 1980 to lose a primary election. The three-term senator, nationally known for his centrist views, has endured harsh criticism in his home state for supporting the Iraq war and has been labeled by some Democrats as too close to Republicans and President Bush.

1. Of course
he didn't get "their message". He's FINALLY realized he's fighting for his political life now and weakly said what he had to say. As with most politicians, he's more than happy to glad-hand you and tell you what you want to hear at Election Time, but, the minute he's back in DC, those who gave him his job are quickly forgotten. I don't know that those in CT are willing to fall for the ol' shell game again, though.

2. Sure he did.
Now the question is how he translated it.

3. "The three-term senator, nationally known for his centrist views..."

Why, in the name of all that is holy, do people call his RW DINO views "centrist"? This is an illustration of how far Right this country and this Party have drifted. The pendulum needs to swing back NOW. Joe needs to go!

GO, NED!

Joe, if you really "got" our message, you would be retiring, not running for office, you putz!

5. That's what I noticed too.
This is far less about ideology and more about common sense. The media consistently refuse to acknowledge that though.

6. Amazing
how someone can get the message when they see they are loosing. Too bad Joe you do not have the support of Diebold.

9. He never got any "message"!
His site is now down and "Under Construction". He's knows he's gonna lose, and he "got the message" so strongly, he's going to ignore it completely, and tomorrow morning, his website will be for his Independent run. That's REALLY listening to the will of the voters.... What a first-class a**hole.

JOE NEEDS TO GO!

7. The only way Senator Lieberman is going to get the message
is if he's voted out.

10. Oh, I'm sure Joe got the message. He's had it all along, most likely.
But that didn't stop him from supporting the war, which was based on lies, and that hasn't kept him from having a close relationship with George Bush. Lieberman is sleeping with the enemy, and for that he cannot be trusted.

Yeah, good ole Joe got the message, and his actions have indicated his clear response to Connecticut citizens: "Fuck yourselves" (to quote VP Dick Cheney).

Send him packing, Connecticut! Ned Lamont is the guy we need!! Out with the old, in with the new!!! NO MORE STATUS QUO - it's not American.
