NV senate: Ensign (R) 46%, Carter (D) 39%
(not great, but closer than I thought)

John Ensign (R) 46%
Jack Carter (D) 39%

August 7, 2006
Republican Senator John Ensign

Incumbent Republican Senator John Ensign (R) is facing an increasingly competitive race in his bid for re-election to a second term in the U.S. Senate. A recent Rasmussen Reports election survey of 500 likely voters shows Ensign’s lead in the single-digits—46% to 39%—over Democrat Jack Carter (see crosstabs ).

Though they’re already seen as their respective parties’ official candidates, both candidates must first face minor contests in Nevada’s August 15th primary. Ensign is being challenged for the GOP nod by Ed “Fast Eddie” Hamilton of Las Vegas and Carter will square off against middle school science teacher Ruby Jee Tun of Carson City. Neither challenger is expected to mount a serious race and Ensign and Carter are already turning their sights to November.

1. Excellent news for Carter
Ensign under 50 and Jack Carter in striking distance. It would be nice to see some trends in this race.

9. I don't trust the margin even if another poll confirms it
I live here and I just don't sense it.

Ensign has yet to go on the air. I haven't even heard his name locally for months.

Maybe Carter has cut into the margin through his positive ads of the last few weeks, plus admirable campaigning all over the state, but the base problem remains: this was not a vulnerable or winnable race to begin with. That's why Oscar Godman stayed away and Harry Reid has been quiet. They can handicap their own city and state.

12. Lieberman lost his primary last night
That isn't a good sign for Republicans or friends of President Bush. No matter how recognized Carter is in Nevada, thse numbers are sinmply part of a still shifting wave of opinion against the Repiblicans. Ensign is a vulnerable Republican jsut because he is a Republican. Carter needs a lot of support right now, and I think you should give him a little more faith.

5. It is very good news for Carter! I think I will donate again! Go, Jack!

To be within single digits--striking distance--is great news! Jack Carter sent me a hand written post card last December thanking me for a small contribution. I was duly impressed, and had donated to him because of an email I had received from his father, the great Jimmy Carter.

Here's to the Democratic wave forming that will sweep Jack into the Senate where he can join our new majority leader, Harry Reid!

8. This is great news!
Coming from someone living in NV with a severe hatred of Ensign going back to '98, this is definitely worth smiling about. It might change over the course of the election, but this at least holds out some hope we can take out the walking rubber stamp that's been Ensign's political life. Then again, don't count out a Republican screwjob to tip the election in his favor. All you have to do is mention border security, defense, and tax cuts to get most of these Republicans out and vote. That and prairies...for that "rustic" feeling.

11. Everybody knows who to send their extra money to now, right?
Before it didn't quite look like that would matter, this is a very good sign that we could very well win this state if we work hard at it. Donate, donate, donate....
